Academic Commons supports GW students and the wider university community through centralized, high-quality learning programs, services, and resources with an emphasis on peer-to-peer engagement. The Academic Commons Learning Assistant (LA) Program offers academic support to a variety of courses primarily at the 1000 and 2000 levels in biological sciences, chemistry, economics, and physics. All ULAs participate in College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified training. Depending on the department, ULAs may be required to enroll in pedagogy course CPED 6100W.
Position Specific Summary
The Undergraduate Learning Assistant (ULA) will provide course and/or section-specific support to students enrolled in ECON 1012. ULAs will host weekly review sessions/drop-in sessions to actively engage students in learning course material. ULAs will be required to attend their assigned class to model effective learning strategies and promote weekly sessions. Additionally, ULAs may be expected to meet with their faculty member to discuss course content and prepare for students accordingly.
Standard Position Description
  • The student will use specialized knowledge of a specific course or subject area to provide academic guidance and peer support to enrolled students.
  • Tasks may include: Hosting weekly review sessions and/or drop-in study sessions; facilitating small group discussions; attending assigned class sessions to model effective learning strategies and promote support services; meeting with faculty to review course material and prepare for sessions; developing study guides or learning materials; and supporting student success in the course.
  • Special projects or duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

*Graduate students performing teaching functions or supporting courses with student interaction must be hired through the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships.

This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided. (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working). Please refer to the preferred qualifications.
