What does an entry level physical therapist do?

An entry level physical therapist helps patients recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve mobility through personalized exercise and treatment plans. They assess patient conditions, develop rehabilitation programs, and provide hands-on therapy under the supervision of experienced physical therapists. Entry level physical therapists also educate patients on injury prevention and healthy movement habits. They usually work in clinics, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers and are often recent graduates beginning their careers in physical therapy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level physical therapist?

To thrive as an Entry Level Physical Therapist, you need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, state licensure, and a solid understanding of human anatomy and rehabilitation techniques. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), gait analysis tools, and therapeutic exercise equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and strong interpersonal skills help build rapport with patients and work effectively within healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for delivering effective patient care, promoting recovery, and ensuring positive rehabilitation outcomes.

What are some common challenges entry level physical therapists face when transitioning from school to clinical practice?

Candidates must hold a current physical therapy license and demonstrate a research interest in musculoskeletal-related physical therapy practice. The successful candidate will play a central role in advancing the research agenda at the University of Rochester's emerging DPT academic program - an exceptional opportunity to contribute to orthopedic rehabilitation research, education, and practice at a major academic medical center.

Successful candidates will be part of a collaborative, solution-focused team of faculty and staff supporting the tripartite mission of excellence in physical therapy education, research, and practice.

The University of Rochester Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (UR DPT) is a 2.5-year, post-baccalaureate, residential program that qualifies graduates to sit for the National Physical Therapy Licensing Exam (NPTE) and prepares graduates for generalist physical therapy practice. The UR DPT program teaches the essential content knowledge, procedural skill and clinical reasoning necessary to utilize physical modalities and movement to address problems associated with cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics, neurology, oncology, and wound management. Evidence-based, population health, and leadership-focused training prepares graduates to provide care across the life span. Special populations included in training are pediatrics, geriatrics, women's health, and sports. The UR DPT rapidly adopts innovations in care and translates these innovations into entry-level training.
