Job description

Company Summary

We are a well-established Japanese company with U.S. headquarters south of Kansas City. The company is renowned for its high-end machine tool products, low employee turnover, strong industry reputation, and a stable, honest, employee-focused culture. We emphasize treating both employees and customers well, promotes efficiency and continuous improvement, and maintains a collaborative, hands-off management style that values self-motivated and independent team members. The company sells and services premium machine tools with a strong focus on Fanuc controls.

Job Summary

Position: Field Service Engineer - The role involves providing field service, installation, and support for high-end CNC machine tools at customer sites. Engineers work independently in a regional territory, performing hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, installations, and customer support with moderate travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting on-site service, maintenance, and repairs of CNC machines at customer facilities
  • Installing new CNC equipment, verifying proper setup, leveling, and alignment
  • Interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and carrying out fundamental electrical diagnostics (such as using a multimeter or wiring contactors/relays)
  • Replacing worn or damaged mechanical parts (e.g., knobs, fasteners, covers, and similar components)
  • Accurately documenting service visits, completing installation records, and submitting all required paperwork
  • Offering remote technical assistance and phone-based support to customers when necessary
  • Delivering hands-on machine training to help customers better understand and operate the equipment
  • Organizing travel itineraries to customer locations and preparing/submitting weekly expense summaries
  • Engaging in online training sessions and ongoing professional development to stay current
  • Approaching all customer interactions with reliability, professionalism, and a helpful attitude

Travel Expectations

  • Regional travel required, typically involving 6–7 overnight stays per month
  • Weekend assignments are infrequent and completely voluntary, with premium (double-time) pay if accepted

Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience servicing or maintaining CNC machine tools (milling centers, lathes, or similar machining equipment); prior work with Fanuc controls is highly desirable
  • Solid mechanical skills and comfort using a wide range of hand tools
  • Capability to understand electrical drawings and perform entry-level electrical fault-finding (multimeter usage, relay wiring, etc.)
  • High school diploma, vocational/technical training, or comparable real-world experience
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving history
  • Self-starter who can operate effectively with little direct oversight
  • Ready and able to travel within the assigned region, including trip planning and territory navigation
  • Dependable, trustworthy individual with strong teamwork skills and a consistently positive demeanor
  • Emphasis placed on the ability to start contributing quickly rather than a specific number of years in the field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical experience working directly with Fanuc controls
  • Previous exposure to premium, high-precision machine tools or similar sophisticated equipment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $85,000 – $105,000
  • Potential total compensation: Up to $120,000 including overtime
  • Overtime: Paid for hours over 40 per week (salary guaranteed even if 40 hours completed early in the week)
  • Per diem: $50 per day for overnight travel
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Company-provided: Cell phone, laptop/computer, and company credit card for business expenses

Additional Benefits:

  • Hotel arrangements can be handled by the company or employee
  • No non-compete agreements required
  • Stable, low-turnover environment with a focus on employee well-being and continuous improvement

Location

  • Based in the Minneapolis area
