Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Genetic counselors help identify families at possible risk of a genetic condition by gathering and analyzing family history and inheritance patterns and calculating chances of recurrence. They provide information about genetic testing and related procedures. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Administrator for Women's and Children's Services and consulting providers such as Neonatalogists.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 

  1. Collaborates with Neonatology providers to counsel patients virtually, monitor abnormal test results from genetic tests.
  2. Communicate using genetics expertise with the Neonatlogy provider to conduct research, education or community outreach.
  3. Performs genetic counseling in accordance with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Scope of Practice guidelines.
  4. Identifies and coordinates appropriate genetic counseling.
  5. Discuss results with the physician and communicate with the patient.
  6. Documents using EPIC.
  7. May assist with data collection
  8. Provides essential genetic counseling services to patients and their families virtually (via telehealth) on various genetic topics. 
  9. Performs genetic counseling in accordance with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Scope of Practice guidelines.
  10. Collaborates and communicates effectively with the Neonatology providers and care team related to patient care, genetics education, community outreach, and potentially research
  11. Coordinates appropriate genetic testing and interpretation of the results for patients and their families
  12. Reports results to the patient and the referring provider
  13. Reviews abnormal genetic test results with neonatal care team and communicates results to patients and their families
  14. Provides patients, families, and healthcare providers education about genetic conditions and available resources as needed
  15. Documents using EPIC.
  16. Stay updated on industry advancements and best practices in genetic counseling
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.  Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Master's Degree from an accredited genetic counseling training program
  • ACMG/ABGC board certified
  • Michigan Medical Board License
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Is proficient with electronic medical records systems
