Certified Coder - Outpatient Neurosurgery

Location: Houston, TX

Pay Rate: Starting at $24.00/hour

Schedule: Monday-Friday | 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Dean's Professional Services is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Certified Coder to support a leading healthcare organization in Houston, TX. This opportunity is ideal for a skilled coding professional with strong outpatient Neurosurgery and E/M coding experience who understands ICD-10-CM, CPT, modifiers, and coding compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation and diagnostic information to accurately assign ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes and modifiers.
  • Assign diagnosis, treatment, and procedure codes for outpatient encounters according to official coding guidelines.
  • Perform accurate outpatient E/M coding, with a focus on Neurosurgery and Neurology services.
  • Apply appropriate coding principles and reimbursement knowledge to support accurate billing and reporting.
  • Review medical records to identify and abstract required clinical and coding data.
  • Ensure coding complies with official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Identify documentation gaps and communicate with providers, leadership, and clinical staff regarding coding and documentation requirements.
  • Query providers when clarification is needed to support accurate and compliant coding.
  • Maintain productivity, accuracy, and quality standards.
  • Stay current with changes to coding guidelines, regulations, reimbursement methodologies, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain professional ethical standards in accordance with AHIMA and industry coding guidelines.
  • Utilize EPIC and other applicable electronic health record and coding systems.
  • Participate in continuing education and maintain required coding competencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate degree in a medical or health information-related field preferred.
  • Must hold one of the following certifications:
    • CCS - Certified Coding Specialist
    • CPC - Certified Professional Coder
    • RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician
    • CMC - Certified Medical Coder
    • CCA - Certified Coding Associate
  • Minimum 2 years of outpatient Neurosurgery coding experience required
  • Minimum 2 years of outpatient E/M coding experience required
  • Ability to accurately code Neurology and Neurosurgery physician services
  • HCC coding experience preferred
  • EPIC experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, modifiers, and outpatient coding guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet productivity and quality expectations.
