Job description

Horizontal Directional Drill Operator – Job DescriptionOverview

The Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of drilling equipment in support of underground utility installation. This role requires strict adherence to safety protocols, a strong focus on quality, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. The operator will collaborate with crew members and coordinate with landowners to ensure successful project execution.


Key ResponsibilitiesEquipment Operation & Safety
  • Safely operate horizontal directional drilling equipment
  • Ensure all personnel maintain safe distances from rotating equipment and blind spots
  • Properly flag, cover, and secure open pits, potholes, and bore holes during and after operations
  • Load and unload drilling equipment safely, including securing loads with proper chain binding
  • Monitor and maintain drill locating systems (transmitters and receivers)
  • Perform daily inspections to ensure all drilling equipment is fully operational
Site Management & Execution
  • Execute job instructions provided by supervisors or project leadership
  • Ensure all work meets company safety and quality control standards
  • Inspect completed work daily to verify it meets project specifications
  • Analyze job site conditions and adjust approach as needed for efficiency and safety
  • Coordinate site activities with landowners and maintain positive working relationships
Documentation & Reporting
  • Complete and maintain all required daily reports and job documentation
  • Ensure all paperwork is submitted accurately and on time through proper channels
  • Communicate effectively with team members and leadership regarding project updates
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance
  • Maintain company vehicle and equipment in good working condition
  • Report maintenance or repair needs promptly
General Duties
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures

  • Perform additional duties as assigned
