Title: Test Cell Technician – Level 1
Reports To: Test Supervisor
Department: Powertrain Testing
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)


Position Summary

The Test Cell Technician – Level 1 is responsible for supporting the setup, operation, and maintenance of engine and vehicle test cells under direct supervision. This entry-level role assists with basic testing activities, equipment preparation, and general shop tasks while developing technical skills related to engine testing and dynamometer operation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operation of engine and vehicle test benches, including associated instrumentation
  • Support setup of production and prototype engines, vehicles, and test systems
  • Perform basic testing activities under supervision
  • Assist with organizing test-related equipment, data, and documentation
  • Follow instructions from senior technicians and engineers during test execution
  • Assist in monitoring test cell operation and reporting irregularities
  • Support routine maintenance and inspections of test equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas (housekeeping / 5S)
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, tools, and equipment
  • Report issues, failures, or abnormalities to supervision promptly
  • Utilize downtime to assist with shop tasks, tool organization, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical training in automotive, mechanical, or related field preferred
  • 0–2 years of hands-on experience in a mechanical or technical environment preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic mechanical or automotive experience (school or work-based)
  • Familiarity with shop tools and equipment
  • Interest in engine testing or powertrain systems

Safety-Sensitive Designation

This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to work around engine and vehicle test systems, mechanical equipment, and electrical systems. The position is subject to Excel Engineering's Drug and Alcohol Policy, including pre-employment and post-incident testing where permitted by applicable state law.


Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform medium to heavy work, including:

  • Lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally
  • Lifting up to 40 lbs frequently
  • Lifting up to 20 lbs regularly

Physical activities include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and repetitive motion. Visual acuity is required for basic inspection and equipment monitoring.


Work Environment

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor test environments and may include exposure to:

  • Moderate to high noise levels
  • Moving mechanical equipment and vehicles
  • Heat, fumes, and shop conditions

Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
