Job Title: Broadcast Engineer - WSOC TV
Position Overview
WSOC-TV Charlotte is seeking a Broadcast Engineer to join a talented, inventive, and dedicated Engineering team supporting live news production and broadcast operations. This role is open to entry-level through senior engineers, with compensation dependent on experience, technical breadth, and demonstrated capability.
The Broadcast Engineer plays a critical hands-on role in maintaining, supporting, and improving studio, control room, and transmission systems in a fast-paced, live broadcast environment. This position provides daily technical support for news production and master control operations during the week and participates in an on-call rotation for weekends.
This is a 100% on-site role based in Charlotte, NC, requiring close collaboration with Engineering leadership, newsroom operations, vendors, and IT partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair technical systems across studio, control room, master control, transmitter, satellite downlink, and microwave transmission facilities
  • Provide real-time technical support for live news production and on-air broadcast operations
  • Support and maintain studio and control room systems including:
    • Production switchers, cameras, intercoms, automation, and newsroom systems
  • Service RF and transmission systems including:
    • Satellite and IP video encoders/decoders
    • Microwave systems, STL, and in-house RF infrastructure
  • Participate in the design, execution, and implementation of engineering projects under the direction of the Director of Engineering and Engineering Manager
  • Collaborate with the local IT team to ensure broadcast systems are secure, compliant, and interoperable within the larger enterprise network, with a focus on cybersecurity best practices
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to non-linear, file-based workflows and broadcast-specific network connectivity
  • Create, maintain, and update technical documentation including system diagrams, drawings, configuration records, and version notes
  • Prepare and deliver required logs, reports, and system status documentation
  • Clearly communicate technical information to engineering leadership, newsroom staff, vendors, and other stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a related technical field or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience in broadcast engineering or a related technical role
  • Working knowledge of FCC rules and regulations applicable to broadcast operations
  • Experience or familiarity with core broadcast systems
  • This is a 100% on-site position in Charlotte, NC
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a live, deadline-driven broadcast environment
  • Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and participate in an on-call rotation as operational needs require
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working on ladders, overhead, and pulling cable through walls, ceilings, and floors
  • Practical knowledge of electrical systems, HVAC, basic construction, and facility infrastructure is beneficial
