What is an entry level mortgage job?

Entry level mortgage jobs are positions in the mortgage industry that require little to no prior experience and are typically designed for individuals new to the field. These roles often include titles like mortgage loan processor, loan officer assistant, or mortgage customer service representative. Entry level employees support senior staff in processing loan applications, gathering documentation, and providing customer service to clients. These positions offer valuable training and exposure to the mortgage industry, making them a good starting point for career growth.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry-level mortgage professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Entry-level mortgage professionals often encounter challenges such as learning complex regulations, navigating multiple loan products, and managing a high volume of client inquiries. Adapting to fast-paced environments and mastering industry-specific software can also be demanding at first. To overcome these hurdles, new hires can benefit from mentorship, ongoing training programs, and actively seeking feedback from experienced colleagues. Building strong communication skills and staying organized are key to handling daily responsibilities and ensuring client satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level mortgage loan officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Mortgage Loan Officer, you need a basic understanding of financial principles, attention to detail, and often a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with loan origination systems, customer relationship management (CRM) software, and, in many states, a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) license is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and effective communication set candidates apart in client interactions. These skills are crucial for accurately guiding clients through the mortgage process, ensuring compliance, and building trust to foster long-term relationships.

What is the difference between Entry Level Mortgage vs Loan Officer?

AspectEntry Level MortgageLoan Officer

Work EnvironmentBank, credit union, or mortgage brokerage; office settingBank, mortgage company, or lending institution; client-facing
Industry UsageEntry-level position assisting with mortgage applications and processingFull professional role handling loan origination and client consultations

While both roles involve working within the mortgage industry, an Entry Level Mortgage typically refers to a beginner position assisting with mortgage processing, whereas a Loan Officer is a more experienced role responsible for originating and approving loans. The Entry Level Mortgage often serves as a stepping stone toward becoming a Loan Officer.

How to get into the entry level mortgage industry with no experience?

Entry level mortgage positions often require strong communication skills, basic financial knowledge, and a willingness to learn. Candidates can start by obtaining a mortgage loan originator license, which involves completing pre-licensing education and passing a background check, and gaining experience through internships or entry-level roles in banking or customer service. Networking and pursuing relevant certifications can also improve chances of entering the industry without prior experience.

Job description

CMS Mortgage is looking for a Loan Officer Assistant to serve as a true right-hand partner to our Loan Officer. This is not an entry-level support role. We are seeking someone with strong mortgage experience who is client-facing, detail-oriented, and confident in managing files and communication from application through pre-approval and beyond.

Required Experience (Read Before Applying):

  • This role requires a minimum of 2 years of recent mortgage industry experience. Applicants without direct experience as a Loan Officer, Loan Officer Assistant, Processor, or Underwriter will not be considered.
  • You will be introduced to every client from day one as a core member of the loan team. You will support the pre-approval pipeline, manage client and agent communication, follow up with active and inactive leads, and ensure files are clean, structured, and moving forward.
  • When the Loan Officer is unavailable, you are the knowledgeable and reliable point of contact that clients and agents trust.
  • If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and take pride in keeping files organized and communication consistent, this role is a strong fit.

Compensation & Perks:

  • Competitive base compensation commensurate with experience.
  • Per-loan bonus structure with additional performance bonuses at volume milestones.
  • Paid access to tools and training resources.
  • Flexible hybrid work structure.
  • Direct mentorship and exposure to a high-performing mortgage operation.

Compensation:

$20 - $30 hourly

Responsibilities:
  • Review and reconcile all incoming applications, including credit, income, and documentation prior to the Loan Officer review
  • Run AUS (DU/LP), identify appropriate loan structure, and flag potential issues early
  • Manage the pre-approval pipeline from application through pre-approval letter issuance
  • Generate and update pre-approval letters quickly and accurately
  • Provide client and realtor communication via phone, text, and email throughout the process
  • Coordinate file setup in ARIVE upon receipt of a purchase agreement, ensuring accuracy of contacts and contract details
  • Provide ongoing borrower updates and milestone communication
  • Follow up with pre-approved clients, incomplete applications, and refinance opportunities
  • Participate in weekly pipeline meetings and maintain accountability across all active files

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2+ years of mortgage industry experience required (non-negotiable)
  • Experience as a Loan Officer Assistant, Mortgage Processor, Underwriter, or Loan Officer strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of income calculation, including self-employed borrowers
  • Hands-on experience with credit review and AUS systems (DU/LP)
  • Ability to structure files and support pre-approvals independently
  • Strong understanding of loan programs, including Conventional, FHA, VA, and Non-QM
  • Prior experience in the broker channel is a plus
  • Familiarity with working across multiple lenders and pricing scenarios is preferred

The Mindset We Cannot Train

  • Detail-oriented, with strong follow-through and accuracy
  • Proactive communicator who keeps clients and the Loan Officer informed
  • Calm under pressure and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Organized and able to manage a high-volume pipeline
  • Professional, warm, and confident in client-facing communication

Please Note:

This is not an entry-level role. We are specifically seeking candidates with prior mortgage experience who can step into the role and contribute immediately.
