Mechanical Engineer - Science and Technology

Our Mechanical Engineering team is looking to add an experienced team member to our group of talented engineers. The Mechanical Engineer is an entry-level engineering role designed for individuals beginning their journey in the professional design of mechanical systems.

About HED

We are a team that is full of ideas, experience, creativity, passionate opinions, insatiable curiosity, uncompromising integrity, commitment, and skill. Our culture is about aspiration, embracing change and challenges, listening to (and learning from) each other, encouraging continual learning, and inspiring collective growth. As an inclusive, integrated architecture and engineering practice, we value the diversity of perspectives, experiences, abilities, and expertise that advance both the work we do, and the world we share.

Position Summary
This role emphasizes learning, support, and skill development while contributing to project delivery. Working under close supervision, the Mechanical Engineer II assists in mechanical calculations, system layouts, and coordination efforts, gradually developing foundational engineering competencies, code understanding, and communication skills.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in performing basic mechanical engineering calculations โ€“ such as load calculations, ductwork sizing, sanitary and vent sizing - under supervision.
  • Create and modify Revit models based on redlines and direction from project leads.
  • Support the development of mechanical construction documentation by placing and tagging elements, updating plans, and reviewing markups.
  • Collaborate with design teams to understand mechanical system coordination and general MEP integration.
  • Learn and apply relevant building codes and standards under mentorship.
  • Research mechanical equipment specifications and summarize manufacturer data for use in system layouts and coordination with other disciplines.
  • Participate in submittal and RFI reviews with guidance from engineers.
  • Engage in construction administration observation and field survey support activities.
  • Take technical meeting notes on mechanical items to build communication familiarity and document coordination items.
  • Complete assigned tasks within established timelines while tracking hours for self-performed work.
  • Begin developing proficiency in QAQC workflows by reviewing personal work and learning HEDโ€™s mechanical drafting and modeling standards.
  • Participate in internal learning sessions, mentorship programs, and project team debriefs to accelerate development.
  • Engage in the DWP process by participating in time estimation exercises and understanding task planning as it relates to electrical scope.

Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent, required.
  • P.E. licensure required.
  • 2+ years in the AEC Industry required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position required.
  • Strong organizational skills preferred.
  • Revit proficiency required.
  • Experience with computers, specifically for word processing, spreadsheet use/creation and email required.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious personalities required.
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations required.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.

Work Environment

  • We embrace a hybrid model that promotes both autonomy and collaboration, including the freedom to work from home, with regular in-office days to connect with teammates and build culture.
  • The office is a professional, open-space environment for collaborative and independent work.
