Job description

You will serve as an entry-level/developmental GG-07 or GG-09 engineer, architect, physicist, chemist, mathematician, or computer scientist within the FARRAGUT TECHNICAL ANALYSIS CENTER at the Office of Naval Intelligence in Suitland, MD, where you will conduct technical research, analysis, and production on adversary naval systems and capabilities.
Qualifications:In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate the following:
For the GG-07 Grade Level:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing duties such as:
  1. Learn basic analytical techniques against tasks and assignments in conjunction with senior analysts to conduct all-source, scientific and technical intelligence (S&TI) analysis on naval platforms and/or systems.
  2. Learn scientific and all-source analysis methodologies and processes for application to basic scientific and technical intelligence (S&TI) problems related to naval platform and/or system capabilities and performance.
  3. Apply engineering and mathematical skills to contribute to engineering assessments.
  4. Learn intelligence collection methods and systems, their capabilities and limitations, and appropriate tasking methods to provide input to verbal and written products.

Have successfully completed a bachelor's degree.

A. Degree -- Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
  1. Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions. A. Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.
GG-1550-07/09 Basic Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
Evaluation of Education
Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.
Eligibility: Current Students and Recent Graduates
Recent graduates who completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate within the last two years of the closing date of the announcement. Also, veterans who were unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree, due to military service obligations but are still within six years of graduation completion date with a qualifying degree. This also extends to those who anticipate graduating in the next 9 months.
