Position Summary
The Marketing & Communications Student Assistant supports San Francisco Bay University's social media, event marketing, and digital marketing efforts. This entry-level, hands-on role is designed for a current SFBU student who is interested in building practical experience in content creation, campus storytelling, event support, and marketing analytics.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Editorial and Operations, the Student Assistant will capture and edit social-first content, draft copy, support campus events, assist with digital marketing campaigns and reporting, and help represent SFBU at San Jose Earthquakes games. The role will work closely with the Communications and Marketing team, including the Events and Marketing Specialist and Digital Marketing and Analytics Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Social Media Content Creation & Support
  • Capture photographs, interviews, and short-form video at student activities, campus events, and other university programs.
  • Edit photos and short-form videos and write concise, audience-appropriate captions and social copy that reflect SFBU's brand voice.
  • Organize, label, and upload content assets so they can be reviewed and reused across university channels.
  • Work with the supervisor to prepare, schedule, and post approved content through Hootsuite as needed.
  • Follow university guidance related to brand standards, accessibility, privacy, content permissions, and appropriate representation of students and community members.
  • Monitor social media and content trends and share relevant ideas with the Communications and Marketing team.

Campus Events & Event Marketing
  • Support the Events and Marketing Specialist with event preparation, setup, guest engagement, tabling, signage, promotional materials, and breakdown.
  • Capture event-day content and help identify student, faculty, staff, and community stories that may be featured across SFBU channels.
  • Assist with event promotion and follow-up content, including drafting social posts, preparing basic digital assets, and organizing event photos and video.
  • Represent SFBU in a welcoming, professional, and inclusive manner when interacting with students, employees, partners, and visitors.

Digital Marketing & Analytics Support
  • Assist with digital marketing campaigns by preparing content, conducting basic research, checking links and assets, and supporting campaign coordination.
  • Help collect and organize basic performance data from social media and digital marketing platforms.
  • Support recurring analytics reports by compiling metrics such as reach, engagement, audience growth, traffic, and content performance.
  • Help maintain accurate content calendars, project trackers, files, and other campaign documentation.

San Jose Earthquakes Game Support
Attendance and participation are required for the following 2026 San Jose Earthquakes games:
  • Saturday, September 12, 2026
  • Saturday, September 19, 2026
  • Saturday, October 31, 2026
  • Four games in the spring, dates TBD
  • Assist with transporting materials, setting up, staffing, and breaking down the SFBU booth.
  • Welcome and engage game attendees, share approved information about SFBU, and distribute university materials.
  • Capture approved photo and video content and support other game-day marketing activities as assigned.
  • SFBU will arrange transportation to and from the games.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
  • Attend scheduled check-ins, accept feedback, and communicate promptly about assignments, availability, and deadlines.
  • Work reliably and collaboratively with Communications and Marketing colleagues and campus partners.
  • Handle university information, account access, and unpublished content responsibly and confidentially.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the department's priorities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a full-time student at San Francisco Bay University.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed at least one full semester at SFBU.
  • Experience creating social media content through employment, coursework, student organizations, volunteer activities, or personal projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Interest in marketing, communications, social media, photography, video, storytelling, events, or related work.
  • Ability to capture clear, engaging photo and video content using a smartphone.
  • Strong writing, editing, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Familiarity with major social platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Facebook.
  • Basic familiarity with content-creation tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar platforms is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Hootsuite or another social media management platform is preferred; training will be provided as needed.
  • Ability to follow brand, privacy, accessibility, and content-approval guidelines.
  • Dependable, punctual, detail-oriented, receptive to feedback, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to interact professionally with SFBU's diverse community and members of the public.

Work Schedule, Environment & Physical Demands
  • Approximately 10 hours per week, with regular work primarily scheduled on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Additional evening or weekend availability may be required for campus events and special assignments.
  • Availability for all required San Jose Earthquakes games listed above is a condition of the position.
  • Work is performed primarily on SFBU's Fremont campus and at approved off-site events.
  • The position requires regular use of a computer and mobile device, movement around campus and event venues, and periods of standing and walking.
  • The Student Assistant will initially use a personal smartphone for content capture; department equipment will be provided when available.
  • Ability to transport or lift event and marketing materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with applicable law.

Salary Range: $18-$22 per hour; this position pays $20 per hour.
