Job description

Home Inspector Trainee - Paid Training Provided

Watertown / Greater Boston, MA
Field-Based

Compensation: $25/hour during training; approximately $65,000-$100,000+ earning potential once independently inspecting

Looking for a hands-on career outside of the typical construction jobsite?

We are looking for a Home Inspector Trainee to join an established and growing residential home inspection company serving Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts.

Previous home inspection experience is NOT required.

This could be a great opportunity for someone with experience in residential construction, remodeling, carpentry, property maintenance, facilities, restoration, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, property management, or another hands-on building-related field who wants to turn that knowledge into a long-term professional career.

You'll receive hands-on training and mentorship to learn how to evaluate residential properties, communicate findings to homeowners and buyers, prepare professional inspection reports, and work toward becoming a licensed Massachusetts Home Inspector.

Already a licensed Home Inspector? We'd still love to speak with you. Experienced inspectors can enter the company's compensation structure based on their existing licensing and career inspection experience.

What You'll Do

  • Learn to perform thorough residential home inspections from experienced inspectors
  • Evaluate major home systems including structural components, roofing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, interiors, exteriors, and other property conditions
  • Learn professional inspection and reporting software
  • Clearly explain inspection findings to homebuyers and clients
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports following each inspection
  • Complete required training and supervised inspections toward Massachusetts licensing
  • Eventually perform inspections independently throughout your assigned territory
  • Continue developing additional inspection skills and certifications, including services such as radon, pest/WDI, infrared, and drone inspections

How the Training & Compensation Works

You'll start with paid training at $25/hour while learning the inspection process and completing the requirements needed to begin inspecting independently.

Once qualified to perform your own inspections, compensation transitions to percentage-based inspection pay, meaning you earn a percentage of the fee for each inspection you complete.

This is NOT a sales position. You are not expected to cold call or find your own customers. The company generates the business and schedules inspections for you.

A typical inspection averages approximately $900 in customer fees, and inspectors earn approximately 28%-40% of inspection fees depending on licensing and career experience. The percentage increases as you build your inspection experience.

Full schedules generally average approximately 4-7 inspections per week, with a long-term target of approximately 300 inspections annually.

Continuing education and approved training are paid at $25/hour, and mileage is reimbursed at the applicable company/IRS mileage rate.

Inspection volume can vary seasonally, and actual earnings will depend on licensing level, inspection volume, services performed, and experience.

What We're Looking For

We don't necessarily need someone who has already been a Home Inspector. We're looking for someone who has the aptitude and genuine interest to become a really good one.

You may be a strong fit if you:

  • Have hands-on knowledge of residential homes, construction, building systems, maintenance, or the trades
  • Enjoy figuring out how things work and spotting potential problems
  • Are comfortable working independently and managing your day in the field
  • Communicate well and can explain technical information in a way that makes sense to the average homeowner
  • Are professional and comfortable working directly with homebuyers, homeowners, and real estate professionals
  • Are detail-oriented and comfortable documenting your findings
  • Have strong computer skills and are comfortable learning inspection/reporting software
  • Have a valid driver's license and are comfortable traveling throughout Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
  • Want to develop a long-term career rather than simply find your next job

Already a Licensed Home Inspector?

We are also very interested in speaking with licensed Massachusetts Home Inspectors.

Experienced inspectors do not need to start at the entry-level trainee tier. Compensation placement is based on licensing and lifetime career inspection experience, with inspector percentages ranging from approximately 28% to 40% of inspection fees.
