JUSTIFICATION: The Cybersecurity Summer Intern position will foster and promote SUNY student talent by providing experiential learning opportunities and supporting the development of a future cybersecurity workforce for New York State government.

BASIC FUNCTION: Assist with monitoring and analyzing cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, and incidents Support the implementation of cybersecurity controls, policies, and best practices Assist with incident response activities and post-incident reporting Collaborate on special cybersecurity projects and presentations WORK PERFORMED: Assist in assessing system, network, and application security risks Support vulnerability scanning, patch management, and system reviews Participate in security awareness, compliance, and documentation efforts Conduct research on emerging cyber threats, technologies, and regulatory requirements Learning Objectives/Skills to be developed: Apply cybersecurity theory in real-world environments Gain exposure to cyber defense operations, governance, and risk management Strengthen technical, analytical, research, and communication skills Develop professional readiness for entry-level cybersecurity roles and project support as needed to advance NY Ventures initiatives. Minimum Qualifications Applicant Major: Currently enrolled in a 4-year degree program. Cyber Security (Required) Operating Systems: Windows 10/11; basic Linux command-line usage (e.g., Ubuntu, Kali) Networking & Security Tools: Vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., Nessus, OpenVAS); SIEM or log analysis platforms (e.g., Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel - exposure level); Firewalls and endpoint protection concepts

Productivity & Collaboration Tools: Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams); Zoom; Version control basics (e.g., Git/GitHub) Knowledge Required: Foundational knowledge of computer systems, networks, and cybersecurity principles Understanding of cybersecurity policies, risk management, and compliance concepts Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion Customer service experience, including phone support Ability to work independently in a remote environment and collaborate effectively as part of a team Strong work ethics, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills Additional Comments June 15th - August 7th Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
