An Entry Level Janitor is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in a facility, such as an office, school, or hospital. No prior experience is usually necessary, as on-the-job training is often provided.
Entry Level Janitors often work early mornings, evenings, or overnight shifts, depending on the facility’s needs, to ensure spaces are cleaned outside of peak hours. You may work independently or as part of a small team, especially in larger buildings where coordination with other janitorial staff is important. Supervisors or lead janitors usually provide guidance and divide cleaning assignments. Being flexible with your schedule and open to occasional weekend or overtime hours can be beneficial. This structure helps maintain cleanliness standards efficiently and allows janitors to support each other when handling larger tasks.
To thrive as an Entry Level Janitor, you need basic cleaning skills, physical stamina, attention to detail, and reliability, with a high school diploma or equivalent often sufficient. Familiarity with cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, vacuum cleaners, and proper use of cleaning chemicals is helpful, though most training is provided on the job.
