Job description

Location: HF Providence Novi Hospital | 47601 Grand River Ave Novi, MI 48374

Status: Contingent - Nights

Schedule: 6p-630p available 7 days a week, with 6a-630p available on weekends and holidays.

Setting: 100% Inpatient and ED Consults | Mostly Adult patients, occasional pediatric age 14 and up.

Call/Weekends: Yes weekends.  No, calls are not required but are available.

Position Overview:

Henry Ford Health is seeking a contingent Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the general surgery team at HF Providence Novi for night, weekend, and holiday coverage. This role functions as the solo overnight provider, responsible for managing post-operative patients, following up on labs and imaging, responding to acute changes in patient status, addressing nursing calls, and managing urgent medication needs, including pain control. The provider will complete new consultations in the emergency department and on admitted patients, perform bedside procedures as indicated, troubleshoot wound vacs, and provide backup support to rapid response teams during simultaneous activations. Coverage includes a broad range of surgical specialties, including general surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB), colorectal, vascular, and thoracic, with additional exposure to plastics, urology, and orthopedics. This is not an entry-level role; candidates must have a minimum of two years of acute care general surgery experience, with demonstrated confidence in diagnosing acute abdomen and vascular ischemia and making decisions regarding urgent operative intervention. Required procedural skills include ultrasound-guided line placement, incision and drainage, and wound debridement. Prior experience as a surgical first assist for at least two years, with availability to take OR call, is also required.

Key Responsibilities

         Evaluate and treat work-related injuries and illnesses

         Manage bloodborne pathogen exposures and vaccination programs

         Perform medical surveillance and respirator fit testing

         Ensure compliance with OSHA, MIOSHA, and CDC guidelines

Employment contingent upon credentialing and completion of Employee Health screening per HFHS policy.

Qualifications:

  • NP or PA graduate from an accredited program
  • Current Michigan licensure
  • National certification (ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA)
  • BLS required; ACLS required (or obtained after hire)
  • Minimum 2 years acute care general surgery experience.
  • 2 years of prior surgical 1st assist.

Education & Training

         Nurse Practitioner (NP): Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)

         Physician Assistant (PA): Completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)

Licensure

         Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan, or in the process of applying (proof of application required)

Certification

         NP: National certification by a certification body recognized by the State of Michigan (e.g., ANCC, AANP)

         PA: Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - required (may be obtained after hire)

DEA / Controlled Substance Licensure

  • PA: DEA and Michigan Controlled Substance License (CSL) required through credentialing
  • NP: DEA registration required through credentialing; NPs do not hold a Michigan CSL and will use their Michigan license number during the application process
