POSITION PROFILE
A pastry chef's job description involves preparing, baking, and decorating a wide variety of desserts and baked goods like cakes, cookies, and pastries. Key duties include recipe creation, managing inventory, maintaining a clean and sanitary workspace, and potentially supervising other kitchen staff. Qualifications can range from a high school diploma for entry-level positions to an associate or bachelor's degree in pastry arts for more advanced roles, along with strong technical skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILTIES
  • Creation and preparation: Bake a wide variety of goods, such as cakes, cookies, pies, pastries, and breads, following both traditional and new recipes.
  • Decoration: Decorate desserts with frostings, glazes, and toppings to create visually appealing presentations.
  • Menu development: Contribute ideas for new dishes and create custom desserts.
  • Inventory and ordering: Check and order ingredients and supplies for the pastry section.
  • Kitchen management: Maintain a clean and hygienic work area and manage kitchen staff.
  • Record-keeping: Keep accurate records of food costs and inventory.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • High school education or equivalent experience. Culinary certificate or degree preferred.
  • An associate's degree in pastry arts or a certificate from a culinary institution is highly desired.
  • Strong baking techniques and the ability to operate kitchen equipment.
  • Creativity in designing unique desserts and new flavor combinations.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous in measuring ingredients and perfecting presentations.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work well with other staff.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and accept criticism.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Able to lift, push, carry 20 - 40 lbs.
  • Stand continuously for long periods of time.
