General Description: Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites applications for qualified individuals to join our faculty to support the mission and vision of the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction. NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, or online platform, and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the College's campuses or off-site locations.
Duties and Tasks: Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.
Essential Functions: NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.
Must reside in the (DC, VA, MD) DMV area.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop and adapt teaching and learning strategies to accommodate the diversity of community college students.
  • Ability to use formative and summative assessment measure to enhance student learning.
  • Experience with or ability to utilize proven teaching strategies that promote student success.
  • Ability to use or incorporate emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods to enhance classroom instruction.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Available to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in the teaching field or associate's degree in the teaching field with coursework in Health Information Management, Health Administration, Health Law or healthcare related field coursework.
  • Demonstrated experience in ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, Computer Assisted Coding and of new technologies and technical concepts.
  • Professional certification by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • Qualifying degree(s) and coursework must be awarded and/or completed by/with a regionally accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time (or full-time equivalent) experience in using, teaching and/or implementing Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems; such as Cerner and/or Epic clinical applications. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.

  • Master's degree in Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration or Health Law or other healthcare related field. Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Research experience in an academic or professional setting.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.
  • Teaching experience of 5+ years in a HIM academic program and/or administrative experience in clinical practice management.
  • 5+ years of experience in teaching on campus or online experience using Canvas or other learning management systems.
  • Professional certification by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • Demonstrated ICD-10-CM/PCS experience with AHIMA credentials as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCSP) or AHIMA Coding Trainer.
  • Experience in developing web-based training for distance learning.
  • Active involvement in clinical practice.
  • Active in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels.
  • Knowledge of educational, management, and learning theory and principles as they relate to HIM and related programs.
