Title: School Bus Driver
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, to ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.
Essential Functions:
Performs other related tasks as assigned. Note: The description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.
Equipment
  • Uses standard automotive and bus equipment, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to and from school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations and other destinations are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in a standard school bus environment.
  • The physical demands described in the job description are symbolic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Give the START prompt prior to each individual standard.
STANDARD 1: The bus driver simulates a front door evacuation.
MEASUREMENT: 45 seconds
INSTRUCTIONS:
a. service door must be closed,
b. must be seated and secured (seat belt fastened) in the driver's seat;
c. must have both hands on the steering wheel of the bus when the evaluation starts,
d. must release the seat belt when the test administrator gives the "start" prompt;
e. must open the service door (either door switch or emergency switch)
f. must backdown the aisle simulating the dismissing of student's row by row
g. must verify no students left in and/or under seats while returning to the front
h. must use the handrails when going down the steps; maintaining three points of contact,
i. must not jump or skip over a step while descending,
STANDARD 2: The bus driver must be able to alternate quickly between the throttle and
the service brake.
MEASUREMENT: 10 times in 10 seconds.
INSTRUCTIONS:
a. must be seated and secured (seat belt fastened) in the driver's seat throughout the test;
b. must have both feet on the floor of the bus when the test starts;
c. must use only your right foot to accomplish the measurement (using the left foot will constitute
an automatic failure of the standard);
d. must move your right foot from the bus throttle to the bus service brake and back to the bus
throttle, repeating this 10 times within 10 seconds; and
e. must depress the throttle and brake only slightly.
STANDARD 3: The bus driver must be able to depress fully and maintain constant,
unassisted pressure on the brake pedal.
MEASUREMENT: 60 seconds
INSTRUCTIONS:
a. must be seated and secured (seat belt fastened) in the driver's seat throughout the evaluation,
b. must have both feet on the floor of the bus when the evaluation starts,
c. must use only your right foot to accomplish the measurement (using the left foot will constitute
an automatic failure of the standard),
d. must fully engage the brake pedal, and
e. must depress the bus service brake for a continuous 60 seconds.
STANDARD 4: The bus driver must simulate an unassisted rear exit evacuation
MEASUREMENT: Type C and D= 1 min 15 sec, Type A= 45 sec
INSTRUCTIONS:
a. must be seated and secured (seat belt fastened) in the driver's seat with both hands on the
steering wheel when the test starts;
b. must release the seat belt system when the test administrator gives the "start" prompt;
c. must then stand up, walk through the interior of the bus to the rearmost exit door, latch the
door into an open position;
d. Must stay at the door while simulating four students' evacuation;
e. Must then verify no students are left on the bus by walking to the front (rear and then front on
Type D) before returning to the rearmost exit door;
f. Driver must then utilize the "sit and scoot" method to exit the bus.
STANDARD 5: The bus driver must be able to move individuals rapidly in a bus emergency.
MEASUREMENT: 125-pound weighted bag must be pulled 30 feet in 30 seconds
INSTRUCTIONS:
a. do not need to hurry or risk injury;
b. may route the duffel bags pull strap over one shoulder, across the back, and under the arm of
the other shoulder or may hold the pull strap in any other position that is comfortable;
c. are encouraged to bend your knees, not just bend from the waist, to get lower to the ground
and thus to create a pulling point as close as possible to the rubber floor mat;
d. must stand on the rubber floor mat at the "start" line facing the duffel bag in a position that
will allow you to walk backward down the mat;
e. must pull the duffel bag down the mat from the "start" line across the "stop" line in 30
seconds;
f. must keep your feet and the duffle bag on the rubber floor mat while completing the test; and
g. may not carry the duffel bag, due to the potential for injury.
Qualifications Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
Certification/License:
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License-Number of poionts on driving record may not exceed 4 points.
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:
  • Must be able to pass physical including a drug test
  • Must pass State Skill Tests and State Written Test
