Job description

This is a full-time position, and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees.

Summary: The purpose of this classification is to outline an entry-level position within a fire department, primarily focused on undergoing intensive training to learn firefighting techniques, emergency medical procedures, rescue operations, and fire prevention practices while assisting experienced firefighters with various duties at the fire station and on emergency calls under close supervision; ultimately preparing to become a full-fledged firefighter upon successful completion of the training program.

 

Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Participating in rigorous physical and classroom training covering fire suppression, rescue techniques, hazardous materials handling, basic life support, ladder operations, and fire prevention education. 
  • Maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of fire station equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
  • Assisting experienced firefighters on emergency calls, including fire incidents, medical emergencies, and hazardous material situations. 
  • Learning to operate firefighting equipment like hoses, ladders, pumps, and rescue tools under supervision. 
  • Participating in public education initiatives to promote fire safety awareness. 
  • Maintaining a high level of physical fitness to meet the demanding physical requirements of firefighting. 
  • Engaging in regular drills to practice firefighting skills and emergency response procedures. 
  • Documenting details of incidents and activities as required. 

Uncertified and unlicensed applicants are encouraged to apply. Glynn County Fire Rescue provides all training.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Must complete Basic Fire School training and obtain certification within the first year of employment and maintain valid Georgia Certified Fire Fighter certification thereafter. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from the state of residence, be 18 years old Possess strong physical stamina and agility. Must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and complete a physical evaluation battery (PEB) based on NFPA 1582 standards.
