The UW Medicine Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology brings together state-of-the-art technology and highly trained, world renowned personnel to provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized service to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories, and other health care organizations. Our operations are based at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union, Northwest Hospital and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's Hospital, the Veteran's Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. These collaborative efforts have generated innovative, translational studies in the basic mechanisms of disease as they apply to diagnostic laboratory medicine and pathology.
The Greninger Lab at the University of Washington is seeking a curious, ambitious Postdoctoral Scholar who wants to tackle challenging questions in virology, genomics, and infectious disease diagnostics.
Led by Dr. Alex Greninger, our R&D group has a strong track record of translating science into clinical and public health impact. We have developed CLIA-validated molecular assays for high-consequence and emerging pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, mpox, measles, and H5 influenza, and have sequenced hundreds of thousands of viral, bacterial, fungal, and eukaryotic parasite genomes to advance our understanding of infectious disease epidemiology. Our biomarker work has also supported successful FDA submissions for novel antiviral and vaccine candidates.
Our research spans virology, microbiology, genomics, molecular biology, and translational diagnostics. This position combines wet-lab and computational research, with opportunities to lead projects, develop new methods, publish first-author work, and collaborate across academic, clinical, and industry research programs.
This is an opportunity to build deep scientific expertise while developing skills relevant to careers in academia, biotechnology, genomics, diagnostics, and clinical research.
Position
  • 1.0 FTE
  • Salary: $5,705-$6,667/month ($68,460-$80,000/year)
  • Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

General Duties
  • Develop, apply, and analyze T-cell receptor sequencing approaches for diverse clinical cohorts.
  • Perform and optimize molecular assays, including RT-qPCR, ddPCR, and next-generation sequencing.
  • Analyze and visualize experimental and genomic data and communicate findings directly with the PI and research team.
  • Lead and contribute to manuscripts, including first-author publications, grant applications, and scientific presentations.
  • Collaborate on new research projects and expand assay methodologies and applications.
  • Mentor junior scientists and students.

The ideal candidate will additionally have experience in:
  • Mammalian cell culture.
  • High-performance computing environments.
  • UNIX and Python and/or R.
  • Reverse genetics systems or viral culture.
  • Advanced statistical or computational data analysis.
  • Extensive prior virology experience is not required. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong scientific fundamentals, intellectual curiosity, and the motivation to learn.

Qualifications
  • PhD in virology, microbiology, genomics, molecular biology, or related fields.
  • Strong molecular biology experience, including RT-qPCR, ddPCR, NGS library preparation, nucleic acid extraction, or related methods.
  • Experience with NGS or genomic data analysis.
  • Evidence of scientific productivity, including first-author publication experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and scientific communication skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new methods and tackling difficult scientific questions.
