The City of Aspen is hiring the following Aspen Recreation Center position:
Job Title: Sports Official
Department: Aspen Recreation Center
Classification: Non-Exempt, Intermittent
Pay Range: $25.00-$50.00/hour - Offer dependent on experience
Position Summary: Officiates youth and adult sports programs by ensuring safe play, enforcing rules, managing participants, maintaining facilities, and reporting game results and incidents.
Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Programs Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
Game/Player Management
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of players and participants by calling penalties and violations in accordance with imposed Rules & By-Laws within the Aspen Recreation youth and adult sports programming.
  • Responsible for monitoring behavior, play and actions of participants while on-site and within the confinements of the programmed event. Must intercede in any disputes and activities on or off the field of play in a professional manner.
  • Safety
    Visually inspects field/court of play and any uses of equipment in the surrounding area to ensure a safe playing environment for players.

Facility Responsibility
  • Sets up and tears down equipment as directed by the Athletic Coordinator for each game.
  • Conducts pre- and post-game walkthroughs to maintain cleanliness and ensure the facility is free of trash.

League Management
  • Follows mandated protocol for reporting Game Results, Injuries/Incident Reports, Rosters, and any notable events to the Athletic Coordinator.

Customer Service
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Applicants must meet minimum age requirements for employment. Assignment to adult leagues requires employees to be 18 years of age or older.
Experience: No prior officiating experience required. Training will be provided by Aspen Recreation staff for individuals seeking to officiate sports programs.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience officiating youth or adult sports, ranging from entry-level to advanced.
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.
  • American Red Cross - CPR 2-Year Certification: Certification must be completed within first year of employment.
  • American Red Cross - First Aid, Health & Safety Certification: Certification must be completed within first year of employment.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours:
  • Intermittent: Hours and days vary depending on scheduled games, events, and league programming within the Aspen Recreation youth and adult sports programs.

Work Environment:
  • Indoors: Aspen Recreation facilities, including areas used for games and activities.
  • Outdoors/Off-Site: Fields or courts of play and surrounding areas, as required by Aspen Recreation programs. Meetings, trainings, and conferences at a variety of city facilities and areas.

Physical Demands:

Balancing: Maintaining equilibrium.
Bending: Bending or position oneself to move an object from one level to another.
Carrying: Occasionally up to 20 lbs. unassisted.
