The choice depends on your desired focus and career path in web development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Full Stack Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, or Java) technologies, supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as React or Express is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you work collaboratively and adapt to changing project requirements. These skills and tools are vital for building, maintaining, and improving dynamic web applications in fast-paced development environments.

What are some common challenges entry level full stack developers face when transitioning from academic projects to real world applications?

Entry Level Full Stack Developers often find that real-world projects are more complex and less structured than academic assignments. They may encounter challenges such as working with legacy code, collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, and managing competing priorities within agile development cycles. Additionally, adapting to company-specific workflows, version control practices, and deployment processes can be initially overwhelming. However, these experiences provide valuable learning opportunities and quickly build practical, in-demand skills.

Whatever path you took, affiliate publishers likely played a role by influencing, informing, or helping you find the best deal. CJ connects brands with these publishers, creating valuable resources for shoppers like you.ย

Overview

You must be work authorized in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.ย

This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days a week in a CJ office location (www.cj.com)

Aboutย CJย Engineeringย

Are we a good match for you?ย

At CJ, we are passionate about software engineering. We build exciting software, with quality andย maintainabilityย in mind. Weย believe in common sense,ย simplicity,ย and efficiency.ย Weย practiceย criticalย thinking, challenge each other no matter the title, and believe in the wisdom of theย team.ย

That makes usย Engineers and not just developers.ย Here are some of the principles thatย setย CJ engineersย apart.ย ย

  • Engineering autonomy: Here, business decisions are made byย businessย people, and technical decisions are made by technical people.ย

  • Fullย stack:ย Expect to be involvedย andย toย gain competenceย in every aspect of software engineering, from frontend, to database, to requirements analysis,ย to testing,ย to helping chooseย technologies.ย

  • Clean, Maintainable code: Code is read more often than it is written, so we put in the effort to write it well in the first place.ย

  • Pairing: The highest quality code is produced by close collaboration, so we pair by default.ย

  • TDD:ย Quality is baked into our processย throughย Test Driven Developmentย

  • Ownership:ย Engineers own the full lifecycle of what they build-from design and implementation to deployment, monitoring, production support, and on-call rotations. If we build it, weย supportย it.ย

  • Operational Excellence:ย We embrace Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, automation, and observability to build reliable systems and deliver software safely, efficiently, and at scale.ย

  • We believe in Agile values, andย incremental development. We constantly experiment, retrospect, and adjust.ย

  • We are committed to finding out how AI can amplify our productivity. We view AI as a force multiplier, not a replacement for good engineering.ย

If this sounds exciting,ย we want to hear from you!ย

As a Software Engineer 2 on the Engineering Experience (EngExp) platform team, you help run and improve the platform that powers CJ's production systems across multiple AWS regions. "Platform" here is broad - it is the Kubernetes clusters, but also the observability stack every squad depends on, the CI/CD and artifact infrastructure their builds run through, the AWS networking that connects them, and the secrets and access systems that gate them.ย EngExpย owns all of it. This is a hands-on,ย operationally-focusedย role:ย you'llย take on well-scoped work across these systems, ship it end to end, and build real depth in them with senior engineers alongside you. We are looking for someone genuinely curious about how these systems work under the hood and eager to grow into owning them.ย

ย ย Responsibilities

The Systems You Work On:

EngExpย owns the systems below.ย You'llย contribute toย operatingย them and build depth in them over time, starting with guidance from senior engineers:ย

  • Observability & monitoring -ย Prometheus,ย Alertmanager, Grafana, andย OpenTelemetryย across production regions.ย You'llย add and tune metrics, dashboards, and alert rules, and learn how Prometheus and Alertmanagerย actually behaveย at scale - cardinality, recording rules, and alert routing. This is real depth to grow into, not just dashboard-building.ย

  • Kubernetes & cloud infrastructure -ย multi-region EKS clusters: routine maintenance, node group changes, controller upgrades, and add-on configuration, with senior engineers alongside.ย

  • AWS networking -ย VPCs, subnets and CIDR management, security groups, and Route53.ย You'llย help keep prod networking healthy and learn the multi-region topology.ย

  • CI/CD & artifact management -ย GitLab CI/CD pipelines,ย GitOpsย delivery throughย ArgoCD, and the Nexus artifact repository.ย

  • Access & identity -ย IAM roles and service accounts for apps in the clusters, Vault-managed secrets, and fulfilling access requests - then helping turn the repetitive ones into self-service.ย

  • Cost observability -ย OpenCostย and cleanup work (e.g.ย orphaned EBS volumes) so cost is attributable rather than shared overhead.ย

What You'll Do:

  • Pick up well-scoped platform work across the systems above and ship it end to endย

  • Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines andย GitOpsย delivery throughย ArgoCDย

  • Write and review infrastructure-as-code with Terraform for AWS resourcesย

  • Add and tune observability - Prometheus metrics, Grafana dashboards,ย Alertmanagerย rulesย

  • Help fulfill and then automate recurring requests (ingress, DNS, service accounts, IAM roles)ย

  • Help investigate platform incidents and document what you learnย

  • Learn to recognize common failure modes (IP exhaustion, resource limits, reconciliation lag) and escalate them earlyย

Technologies We Use:

  • Kubernetes / EKS (multi-cluster, multi-region),ย Karpenter, cert-manager, external-dnsย

  • Prometheus,ย Alertmanager, Grafana,ย OpenTelemetryย (and long-term storage / sharding for Prometheus)ย

  • AWS networking (VPC, VPC peering, Transit Gateway, Route53, NAT Gateway, security groups, subnet/CIDR design across accounts and regions)ย

  • Terraform, AWS (IAM, EKS, S3, EBS)ย

  • ArgoCD, GitLab CI/CD, Nexus (artifact registry), Docker, container image build pipelinesย

  • Vault,ย OpenCostย

ย Qualifications

What We Look For:

  • 1-2 years of experience in software or infrastructure engineeringย

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experienceย

  • Comfortable in the terminal and reading YAML, Terraform, or similar declarative configย

  • Some exposure to cloud (AWS or equivalent) and containers - production Kubernetes experience is a plus, not a requirementย

  • Genuine interest in operating real systems - especially observability - and growing deep in themย

  • Willing to learn how systems fail and to ask questions when something looks offย

  • Effective communication; enjoys pair programming and code reviewย

Nice to Have:

  • Hands-on exposure to Kubernetes, Terraform, or GitLab/GitHub CI/CDย

  • Any experience with Prometheus/Grafana or another metrics stackย

  • Scripting in Python, Bash, or Goย

What Success Looks Like:ย

  • You reliably deliver well-scoped platform work end to end with decreasing oversightย

  • You'reย building genuine depth in at least one system we own, not just familiarity with the toolsย

  • Other engineers find the workflows you touch easier and more predictable to useย
