Under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the PT Maintenance Worker will provide support for town events, assist in the oversight of operations of the park and open play rentals, assist staff with the completion of work orders, inspection and service and cleaning of parks, greenways, and park facilities, landscaping duties, sports field maintenance. This position may perform other various field assignments as required within the scope of this classification.
This opportunity provides individuals with experience in landscaping, park maintenance, and horticulture with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience during the summer months through first-hand observation of the operation and organization of a local government parks maintenance division.
Essential Functions
The Town's various departments may provide seasonal opportunities. The seasonal program offers meaningful, educational, complex, and difficult professional, entry-level work where the incumbent gains hands-on experience in a specific field to supplement and enhance their academic programs. Seasonal opportunities are advanced in their background and experience. These seasonal opportunities add value to the Town, the specific department, and the incumbent's development as a professional in the field. Incumbents perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence. Decisions made or actions taken require experience, and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance with policy and procedures.

Essential Duties and Tasks:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating procedures, application instructions, etc.

  • Ability to safely operate or use equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies for the assigned duties. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and various types of landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to work and contribute in a team environment and respectfully treat co-workers and customers. Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of communication and organization techniques; professionalism in the workplace; English grammar and composition; office equipment, including personal computers and software programs.
  • Skill to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and effectively adhere to oral and written instructions, communications, and procedures; maintain confidentiality as related to work assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees and the public; operate computer hardware, software, and other office equipment.

Desirable Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience leads to completing a high school diploma or equivalent. Six months to one-year related experience in performing landscape maintenance duties requiring the use of equipment like or the same as those assigned to this full-time classification. Employees must have a valid North Carolina license prior to employment and a good driving record. Municipal experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
To perform the essential functions of the job, a Maintenance Worker must be able to perform the following:
Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, climbing, crawling, walking, pulling, lifting, fine motor dexterity, grasping and seeing/observing; ability to work and stand for long periods of time. Ability to work outdoors under adverse and varied weather conditions.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Once an offer of employment has been extended, candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including NC State Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting.
