Job description

NOTE: POSITION MAY BE FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME, DEPENDING ON BUSINESS NEED AND CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE
About the Organization
TechTown Ops+ is a full-service solution designed to alleviate the administrative burden for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits by offering expert HR, payroll, benefits administration, and finance/accounting support. Tailored for businesses at various growth stages, Ops+ handles essential back-end operations so owners can focus on strategic growth and innovation rather than paperwork.
About the Opportunity
We are looking for a people-oriented and highly organized HR Assistant to support our HR team. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for a recent college graduate or a student in their final year of an HR, Business, or related program. You will support experienced HR professionals in delivering HR services - including onboarding, benefits administration, compliance, and employee support across a diverse portfolio of clients. You will be a key support resource for the team, helping to ensure our clients' employees and HR processes are well cared for.
The Impact You Will Make:
  • Assist with new hire onboarding processes including document collection, system entry, and orientation coordination for client organizations
  • Support benefits administration tasks such as enrollment tracking, renewal reminders, and employee inquiries (under supervision)
  • Help maintain accurate employee records and HR files in our HRIS systems
  • Assist with recruiting coordination including posting job listings, scheduling interviews, and communicating with candidates on behalf of the team
  • Support payroll preparation by gathering timesheets, tracking PTO, and flagging discrepancies for senior staff review
  • Help draft HR communications, policy documents, and templates under the direction of senior HR team members
  • Assist with compliance tracking, including I-9 documentation, ACA records, and other required filings
  • Support the team on special HR projects, process improvements, and ad hoc tasks as needed
  • Assist with developing and maintaining internal and external SOPs to support scalable service delivery
  • Support Ops+ events, including registration management, catering coordination, presentation materials, set-up, and communications
  • Maintain tabling event supplies and materials, including assembling and stocking Ops+ event bags
  • Assist with drafting client communications and documents for external use

Requirements
What You Will Bring to the Table:
  • Currently completing or recently completed a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Foundational knowledge of HR principles, employment basics, or people operations (coursework counts)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - you'll be helping draft employee-facing materials
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); exposure to an HRIS or ATS is a plus
  • Dependable, curious, and comfortable asking questions in a fast-paced environment
  • A genuine interest in people and a desire to grow in the HR profession

Compensation:
The budgeted hourly rate range for this position starts at $22 per hour and may be adjusted according to qualifications and experience.
The Perks:
  • TechTown offers generous health and dental plans as well as vision, life insurance, short-term disability, a 401(k) plan, and a team member assistance program. Full-time team members also receive:
  • 100% TechTown paid Life, STD, and LTD benefits
  • Wellness Inspired Workplace with a Wellness Program and onsite Wellness Room
  • 5 Weeks of paid time off per year
  • 23 paid holidays (including 2 weeks in December and 1 week in July)
  • 10 Paid Mental Health Days per year
  • $2500 Professional development stipend
  • Retirement plan with employer matching up to 6%.
  • Paid parental leave
  • Creativity and innovation supported and encouraged by leadership
  • Fulfillment and the knowledge of having made an impact in Detroit's economic growth

Work Arrangements:
This position is primarily an in-person role. We believe in-person work fosters better collaboration, stronger team dynamics, and more effective learning opportunities, especially for cross-functional projects and informal knowledge sharing.
However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility. Therefore, this role allows for periodic hybrid work, subject to manager approval and departmental needs. The specific hybrid work schedule can be discussed during onboarding and revisited as needed to support organizational goals and individual work-life balance.
Accessibility:
At TechTown Detroit, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, accessible environment where all team members, clients, and tenants feel valued, respected, and supported. We are dedicated to building a workforce that reflects the communities in which we live and serve and creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.
If you are a candidate with a disability and need an accommodation to complete the application process, email our Human Resources department at hr@TechTownDetroit.org. Include your full name, the best way to reach you, and the accommodation needed to assist you with the application process.
