Summary:
General Summary:

The Endoscopy Technician III works under the direction of a physician, department leadership, and/or registered nurse. Provides support to the Endoscopy department before, during and after procedures. This role will serve as a resource, coach, and preceptor for other Endoscopy Technicians at RUMC while performing the duties of disinfecting endoscopic equipment, assisting physicians with the technical components of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures as assigned. In addition, this role exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and ICARE values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Education and Experience:
Required
โ€ขHigh school diploma or equivalent.
โ€ข4 years of current Endoscopy Technician experience.
โ€ขCurrent GI Technical Specialist (GTS) certification or Advanced GTS.
โ€ขCurrent experience with decontamination and reprocessing of all instrumentation used in assigned department; according to regulatory agency requirements and standards set forth by professional organizations and institutional policies.
โ€ขPrior clinical training may include CMS, CNA, PCT, EMT, corpsman, or paramedic training.
โ€ขSuccessful completion of the institutional screening examination.
โ€ขCurrent Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
โ€ขAdvanced knowledge of GI anatomy and aseptic techniques.
โ€ขProblem solving skills.
โ€ขExcellent communication and customer service skills.
โ€ขBasic computer skills.
โ€ขDemonstrates effective communication skills to foster teamwork within the work environment that ultimately supports the mission and values of Rush.
โ€ขDemonstrates knowledge of age appropriate care when caring for patients and treats patients, visitors, and staff in a caring manner with respect and dignity.

Other Duties:
Intravenous Line Insertion/Phlebotomy
โ€ขUnder direction of the physician and supervision of a registered nurse, the Endoscopy Technician III will insert peripheral intravenous lines (PIV) and applies dressing in compliance with hospital and unit procedure.
โ€ขDemonstrates basic understanding of procedure to be performed ensuring proper placement of PIV line to not interfere with planned procedure
โ€ขProvides instruction/information to patient/significant other concerning placement of IV line/care being provided.
โ€ขAssists in emergency situations as needed.
โ€ขUnder the direction of physician and supervision of a registered nurse, performs phlebotomy as assigned. Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands:
โ€ขAbility to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.
โ€ขLifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and supporting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
โ€ขWork conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
โ€ขThe ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter and retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images or reports is required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Provides training and support, clinical guidance, and serves as the resource point for all entry level endoscopy technicians and trainees.
2.Provides orientation for newly hired Endoscopy technicians.
3.Handles complex issues demonstrating clinically competent knowledge to provide solutions for the needs of the technicians.
4.Assists clinical team with endoscopic procedures that includes pre-procedure set-up (including documentation within ProVation and scope tracking software programs), assistance intra-procedure with specimen collection and treatments (including obtaining tissue specimens, polypectomies, therapeutic injections, and dilatations), and post-procedure processes with management of equipment and supplies.
5.Demonstrates proficiency in the use of unit specific equipment and supplies that includes preparing and maintaining endoscopic equipment during procedures (i.e., electro-cautery, heating probes, endoscopic light source).
6.Demonstrates accurate cleaning and disinfecting procedures for all endoscopes and accessory equipment that adheres to Infection Control Guidelines and equipment manufacturer instructions for use.
7.Reports equipment malfunctions to either charge nurse or unit leadership and ensures the scope tracking process is maintained within the scope tracking program (SPM).
8.Reports to Charge RN or designee for assignment of duties and sets priority of duties based on needs of patient and unit, under the direction of the RN.
9.Keeps procedure rooms orderly and independently organizes and restocks according to unit specifications.
10.Transports laboratory specimens, blood products, and patient belongings as required and assists with the admission, discharge, and transport of patients.
11.Performs routine specimen collections (blood glucose, urine, etc.).
