Job description

CONMED is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Advanced Surgical R&D team based in Denver, CO. This role will partner with cross-functional teams to design, develop, verify, and maintain secure software components and subsystems for medical devices used in laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgical procedures.

The Software Engineer II is an independent component owner who works with moderate guidance, owning defined software scope, planning and executing development and verification activities, and resolving moderately complex technical issues while escalating risks appropriately.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Own assigned software components, features, or small subsystems across the full secure development lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, code review, verification, release, post-market support, and maintenance.
  • Design, develop, debug, and maintain secure embedded, application, and/or control-system software for medical devices.
  • Translate user needs, system requirements, and design inputs into clear, testable software requirements and design specifications.
  • Contribute to secure architecture and implementation decisions that support product security, safety, and effectiveness in alignment with IEC 62304, IEC 81001-5-1, and CONMED quality system expectations.
  • Develop and maintain unit tests, integration tests, verification protocols, test reports, and traceability; execute verification, investigate defects, support root-cause analysis, and implement corrective changes.
  • Conduct peer code reviews to help ensure quality, maintainability, testability, and cybersecurity.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, clinical, and marketing stakeholders to resolve interface issues and ensure software meets user, product, safety, and business needs.
  • Support design transfer, manufacturing release, and sustaining engineering activities for new and released products.
  • Apply established engineering processes, secure development practices, and design controls, using standard tools for source control, issue tracking, requirements management, automated testing, and configuration management.
  • Identify technical risks, schedule blockers, and requirement gaps within assigned scope; communicate status clearly and escalate appropriately.
  • Apply AI-enabled development methods responsibly, such as coding assistance, test generation, documentation support, requirements analysis, and prototyping, while maintaining engineering judgment and compliance with regulated development practices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree required in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of relevant software development experience, preferably 2–4 years, using Java and/or C/C++ in embedded, application, control-system, or regulated-product environments.
  • Experience carrying at least one software component or feature through design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release or maintenance support.
  • Training, project work, or practical experience applying AI-enabled tools or methods to software development, test development, documentation, or related engineering workflows.
Knowledge and Experience Qualifications
  • Solid foundation in software design principles, data structures, algorithms, secure coding practices, and debugging.
  • Working knowledge of embedded, application, control-system, or distributed software relevant to medical-device development.
  • Experience writing and maintaining unit tests, integration tests, and verification evidence.
  • Experience with source control, code review practices, issue tracking, and software development lifecycle tools.
  • Ability to write clear software requirements, design descriptions, test protocols, test reports, and defect investigations.
  • Familiarity with SQL databases, data persistence, or structured data handling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs, risks, and status to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience contributing to software design and development under IEC 62304, IEC 81001-5-1, FDA design controls, ISO 14971, or similar regulated-product standards.
  • Experience with medical-device software, surgical systems, capital equipment, robotics, energy-based devices, or connected healthcare products.
  • Experience with web application development, cloud-connected systems, cybersecurity, device connectivity, or data pipelines.
  • Experience with scripting or analysis languages such as Python, MATLAB, Ruby, or R.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants, AI-assisted test generation or code review, machine learning, computer vision, or other applied AI/ML development workflows.
