Entry Level Electrical information

What are entry level electrical jobs?

Entry level electrical jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the electrical field, often requiring minimal experience and providing on-the-job training. These roles typically involve assisting licensed electricians with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Duties might include running wires, assembling electrical components, and following safety protocols. Entry level positions are a great way to gain hands-on experience and can lead to more advanced roles with additional training and certification.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as an entry level electrical engineer?

As an entry-level electrical engineer, you'll typically be assigned to support larger projects by performing tasks such as drafting schematics, assisting with circuit design, performing basic calculations, and testing prototypes. You may also help with troubleshooting electrical issues under the guidance of senior engineers and participate in site visits or equipment inspections. This hands-on experience allows you to build foundational skills and gradually take on more responsibility as you become familiar with industry standards and your team's workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level electrical technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Electrical Technician, you need a basic understanding of electrical theory, wiring, and safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with hand tools, multimeters, circuit testers, and reading electrical schematics is typically required, and certifications like OSHA-10 or NCCER can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and willingness to learn new concepts are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems in compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Automation Coordinator with the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of PLC systems, plant control computers, plant supervisor controls, and plant network systems, including company computers.
  • Support tuning and adjustment of PID loops to improve control performance and process stability.
  • Promote and help implement new automation upgrades, features, and enhancements that improve plant performance and reliability.
  • Work closely with the Electrical/Instrument Supervisor to maintain and improve plant optimization and ensure alignment of automation and instrumentation activities.
  • Assist the Automation Coordinator in establishing, monitoring, and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of automation-related spare parts.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal customers across the plant to understand their needs and provide responsive automation support.
  • Ensure all automation activities conform to established Automation, IT, and corporate guidelines, standards, and procedures.
  • Operate PCs, operation computers, and process computers to monitor, troubleshoot, and adjust plant control systems.
  • Learn the operation of kiln, raw mill, and finish mill systems and apply this knowledge to enhance control strategies and system performance.
  • Collaborate closely with Process Engineers to understand plant equipment and its functionality, and to enhance control of main equipment for optimal plant performance.
  • Participate as an active member of the plant team, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the automation function and overall plant operations.
  • Meet on-call responsibilities in a 24/7 operation, once development criteria are met, to provide support for critical automation issues as needed.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team to support continuous improvement in both the functional area and overall plant operations.
  • Willingness and ability to meet on-call responsibilities in a 24/7 operation once adequately trained.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting automation and control issues.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal customers, Process Engineers, and Electrical/Instrument teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Interest in growing automation experience under the mentorship of a highly experienced (25+ years) automation engineer.
  • Exposure to or experience in chemical manufacturing or similar process industries.
  • Familiarity with tuning PID loops and optimizing process control systems.
  • Willingness to learn the operation of kiln, raw mill, and finish mill systems and apply this knowledge to control strategy improvements.
  • Motivation to promote new automation upgrades and features that enhance plant performance.
  • Commitment to follow Automation, IT, and corporate guidelines and standards.

Work Environment

This role is based in a cement plant environment, with approximately 80% of the time spent in an office setting performing programming and computer-based work, and about 20% on the manufacturing floor. The office area is climate controlled and focused on computer, control system, and engineering tasks.
