The DGR Engineering Electrical Power Department in Rock Rapids, Iowa specializes in the planning and design of infrastructure improvements for electrical power utilities in the upper Midwest. Typical projects include power generation, substation, transmission and distribution systems design and construction management.

Position Summary

DGR Engineering is seeking a detail-oriented Electric Distribution Designer to support the planning and design of electrical power distribution systems. This role focuses on developing underground and/or overhead distribution designs, preparing construction documents, and supporting project teams in delivering utility infrastructure projects.
Candidates with experience in underground or overhead electric distribution design are encouraged to apply.  While preferred, experience in these areas is not required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems (primary and secondary)
  • Prepare construction drawings, staking sheets, and plan sets
  • Perform load analysis, voltage drop, and equipment sizing calculations
  • Conduct field visits and collect data for design development
  • Develop material lists, cost estimates, and documentation
  • Coordinate with engineers, clients, and construction personnel
  • Assist with permitting, easements, and right-of-way coordination
  • Provide technical support during construction
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree or technical training in a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ability to interpret plans and engineering drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to travel within the region to Clients and jobsites.
  • Be able to gain familiarity with engineering and design software as needed.  Desirable experience in: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Adobe or Bluebeam, AutoCAD, GIS, Milsoft.
  • Electrical systems knowledge is not a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Basic understanding of electrical distribution systems
  • Experience in utility distribution design
  • Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, or utility design software
  • Knowledge of permitting and easement processes
  • Field experience in utility construction
