Entry Level Consulting information

What is entry level consulting?

Entry level consulting refers to positions for recent graduates or those new to the consulting field who assist organizations in solving business problems. These roles typically involve data analysis, research, preparing presentations, and supporting senior consultants on client projects. Entry level consultants gain exposure to various industries, develop problem-solving skills, and learn to communicate effectively with clients. It's a foundational role that offers training and career growth opportunities within consulting firms.

How do I get into entry level consulting with no experience?

Entry level consulting roles often require strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. Candidates can improve their chances by gaining relevant internships, developing skills in data analysis and project management, and earning certifications such as the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) or completing relevant coursework. Networking and demonstrating a proactive attitude are also important for breaking into the field without prior experience.

What does a typical project assignment look like for an entry level consultant, and how involved will I be in client interactions?

As an entry-level consultant, you'll often be assigned to project teams where you'll support tasks such as data analysis, research, preparing client deliverables, and contributing to presentations. Early in your career, most client interactions will be alongside more senior team members, giving you the chance to observe, learn, and gradually participate more actively as your confidence grows. The collaborative nature of consulting means you'll regularly work with colleagues from different backgrounds, offering a dynamic learning environment. Over time, high performers can expect to take on more responsibility and direct client communication as they progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Consultant, you need strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and a relevant bachelor's degree such as in business, economics, or engineering. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and sometimes data visualization or project management tools is usually required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies enable consultants to deliver actionable insights, work effectively with clients and colleagues, and drive project success.

This allows candidates to specialize from the beginning. Each practice specializes in different aspects of consulting, and a brief explanation of each is provided below. If you are selected for the interview process, you will be informed which practice you will be interviewing for.
Generalist Consulting for Broad Industry Exposure
  • Generalist consultants may work across all industries and capabilities at Oliver Wyman allowing them to acquire a breadth of knowledge and skills before aligning to a practice to focus on deepening content knowledge. Our CCG can support work across Consumer, Telecom and Technology, Energy and Natural Resources, Banking & Financial Services, Health and Life Sciences, Performance Transportation, Private Capital and Transportation and Advanced Industrials industries.

Banking & Financial Services Strategy & Risk
  • In our Banking & Financial Services practice, our consultants are positioned at the heart of the global financial system. We advise banks, insurers, asset managers, market infrastructure providers, and regulators on critical decisions that will shape the future of Financial Services, capital, risk, regulation, and growth. From day one, you will gain a thorough understanding of how financial institutions operate, how they serve clients, how they determine their customer and product strategies, and how they manage balance sheets, capital and liquidity, risk models, governance, and regulatory frameworks.

AI, Data, Analytics & Advanced Applications
  • We combine technical skills and data expertise to deploy cutting-edge AI solutions. Our consultants design, prototype, and operationalize machine learning, generative AI, and advanced-analytics solutions across diverse industries and work closely with data scientists and product teams. This role is ideal for analytical thinkers who love experimentation and applying cutting edge technology to real-world business problems.

  • For this specialized role candidates may have:

  • Technical or quantitative academic background (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics) or equivalent practical knowledge from internships, co-ops, and / or similar experience

  • Proficiency in at least one programming or data language (for example Python, SQL, or R) and comfort working with data and analytics teams

  • Strong quantitative and structured problem-solving skills: ability to form clear hypotheses, identify the right data, design analytical approaches, and draw defensible conclusions

Technology-Driven Transformation and Change Implementation
  • We lead high-impact, tech-enabled transformations for the largest companies, from strategy through implementation. Our consultants partner with engineering, architecture, and product teams to coordinate rollout sequencing, integrations, and sustainment, often on multi-year engagements. This role combines systems thinking, delivery discipline, and technical skills to improve the technology, processes, and ways of working for thousands of people at the world's largest organizations.

  • Technical or quantitative academic background (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics) or equivalent practical knowledge from internships, co-ops, and / or similar experience

  • Practical understanding of software architecture, development lifecycles, cloud and enterprise deployment patterns, and how to partner effectively with engineering and operations teams

  • Aptitude for solving business problems with technology: ability to take an ambiguous business objective, reimagine workflows and processes by leveraging technology, and propose pragmatic solutions while considering value, risk, and delivery complexity

Private Equity, Deals, Diligence & Post Transaction
  • The Private Capital team partners with private equity investors across the deal lifecycle -- from opportunity assessment and commercial due diligence to post-transaction value creation -- helping shape critical investment decisions through rigorous, insight-driven analysis. We combine industry and functional expertise, proprietary tools, and a global expert network to deliver differentiated results.

  • Analyze markets, customers, and competitive dynamics

  • Synthesize findings into clear, client-ready recommendations

Prior consulting or private equity experience is not required; we seek high-potential candidates eager to learn and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Why Join us?
  • Come aboard if you are excited by challenges and want to work across different cultures.

  • We want you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace your curiosity.

  • Our consultants learn on the job and receive formal training to develop their communication, presentation, analytical, and client management skills.

  • You'll find genuine colleagues who stand by their beliefs and measure success by the lasting impact you create together.

  • We believe in flexibility, including the opportunity of hybrid working. You are also invited to join our employee resource groups and social activities.

  • Our open, inclusive, and down-to-earth culture will enable you to bring your best authentic self to work.

  • You'll work alongside down-to-earth colleagues who do serious work, but don't take themselves too seriously.

  • There's no corporate mold to fit and hierarchy doesn't get in the way.

  • We do not let artificial barriers stand in the way of your personal career progression.

We look for initiative, intuition and creativity with a strong background in problem solving and analytics. We do not require a specific academic major or industry experience and we value extracurricular activities and evidence of leading an interesting and impactful life outside of studies/work.
