POSITION SUMMARY
The Field Engineer is an entry-level construction position responsible for providing field engineering and project support to Orion's marine and heavy civil construction operations.
Working directly on active construction projects, the Field Engineer assists with the inspection and measurement of project materials, surveying and layout activities, quantity calculations, project documentation, procurement coordination, and work-control requirements necessary to ensure the accurate installation of materials by field crews.
The Field Engineer works closely with Project Managers, Project Superintendents, Project Engineers, Safety Representatives, Foremen, and skilled craft professionals to support the safe, efficient, and successful completion of projects.
This position provides an excellent opportunity for recent Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Science, or related graduates who want to build a career in marine and heavy civil construction while gaining hands-on experience with a self-performing contractor.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works with the Project Management Team and jobsite crews to support the successful completion of ongoing and new construction projects.
  • Assists with field engineering, construction layout, surveying, project controls, documentation, and coordination of construction activities.
  • Assists in the development of bid proposals for upcoming marine and heavy civil construction projects when assigned to an office.
  • Assists with estimating project costs, including materials, services, labor, equipment, and other associated costs.
  • Performs drafting, charting, quantity calculations, and similar graphical or technical work.
  • Works with Project Managers and Project Engineers to coordinate procurement of materials required at the jobsite.
  • Inventories, checks, examines, and measures materials received to verify appropriate quality and quantity.
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings, project plans, specifications, and related technical documents.
  • Establishes work-control lines and elevations required for accurate measurement and installation of construction materials, including concrete forms, anchor bolts, piping, hangers, supports, and related components.
  • Verifies as-built conditions utilizing appropriate surveying techniques.
  • Performs topographic and cross-section surveys as required for project planning, construction activities, and payment quantities.
  • Performs quantity calculations and maintains supporting documentation as required.
  • Coordinates surveying activities with assigned engineers and project leadership to meet construction requirements.
  • Supports project scheduling, cost control, progress tracking, and project documentation.
  • Works closely with field crews to gain a practical understanding of self-perform construction operations, means and methods, equipment, and project execution.
  • Ensures project team members and work crews perform their responsibilities safely and understand applicable safe-work practices and policies.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives designed to support regulatory compliance and continuous improvement of Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant work experience, required.
  • Previous internship, co-op, or hands-on experience within marine construction, heavy civil construction, infrastructure construction, or a self-performing contractor environment is preferred but not required.
  • Entry-level and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability and willingness to work in an active construction jobsite environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Interest in developing knowledge of project management, construction administration, marine construction, materials procurement, estimating, scheduling, project controls, cost management, and safety and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to quickly learn the technical and operational aspects of marine and heavy civil construction.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, including project management, field supervision, engineers, and craft professionals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
  • Willingness to travel and/or relocate to project locations based on business and project requirements.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in or visiting areas where PPE is required. This may include hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, steel-toed footwear, personal flotation devices, fall-protection equipment, and other protective equipment appropriate to the work environment.
Field Engineers must also be capable of:
  • Walking, stepping, climbing, and moving throughout active construction jobsites.
  • Safely accessing and exiting work barges, boats, vessels, docks, piers, and other marine facilities with varying heights and access conditions.
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to heights of approximately 40 to 50 feet.
  • Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights when required.
  • Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds as required.
  • Working outdoors and adapting to changing or extreme weather and temperature conditions.
  • Identifying critical issues and communicating appropriate action plans with project and Company leadership.
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and responding appropriately based on the circumstances and direction provided by Safety Representatives or other management personnel.
  • Evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency arise.
