Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Commercial Engineer requires an in-depth understanding of electrical power generation design, installation, operation, and maintenance. This includes all equipment that Empire may work with, such as electrical products, transformers, switchgear, automatic transfer switches, electrical conduit and cabling, remote monitoring systems, exhaust flow and restrictions, cooling mediums and principles, HVAC systems and CAT complete system integration. Serve as a technical liaison between department and suppliers. Maintain current knowledge of products to be used on various projects, as well as their compatibility with CAT and other vendor warranties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Participate in the design process, interpret, and review electrical systems that will be used in various installations, all to National Electric Code (NEC), local and consulting engineering specifications. Assist with detailed and engineered computer aided design (CAD) drawings of equipment and project layouts.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between department and suppliers. Maintain current knowledge of products to be used on various projects, as well as their compatibility with CAT and other vendor warranties.
  • Review mechanical and electromechanical systems and products, design and conduct research programs and apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
  • Collaborate with team members on various engineered solutions specific to unique ambient conditions. This may include airflow, thermal dynamics, and acoustic solutions. 
  • Participate in job walks, coordination meetings, and site visits to support the overall sales process and equipment startup.
  • Communicate, review and further research client inquiries regarding status of project and deadlines. Communicate with internal departments about current and future projects.
  • Audit and review quotes, design files to ensure compliance with regulatory internal, state, and federal policies and procedures. Maintain client records, document, and internal database. Completes administrative task as necessary.
  • Audit internal and external documentation, requests, blueprints, electrical systems throughout the project and provide updates as needed. 
  • Conduct research and analyze internal project data and assist in decision making based on analysis.
  • Communicate effectively with both internal and external clients, vendors, and internal personnel.
  • Works safely at all times.  Adheres to all applicable safety policies.  Complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:   
  • Must be willing to travel to jobsite or engineering locations to assist with technical information.
  • Must be willing to have 10% travel throughout the US for factory testing and quality control checks.   
  • Must be willing to remain flexible with varied workload and priorities.   
  • Submit necessary reports, records, and data in a quality and timely manner.
  • Establish personal networks, participate in professional societies.
  • Effectively participate and contribute as part of a team, assist where appropriate and request assistance when needed.
  •  Works within and promotes corporate values.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to use CAD design programs, electrical system design, integration and operation.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, state and local electrical code compliance.
  • Ability to perform CAT Electric Power Generation (EPG) systems integration and installation.
  • Working knowledge of Thermal, Acoustical and Fluid dynamics.
  •  Working knowledge of HVAC System design, engineering and operation.
  • Working knowledge of cogeneration plant design, compatibility, and system financial modeling.
  •  Working knowledge of remote monitoring solutions for various engineered solutions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Suite; Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to maintain consistent attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
  •  High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Must have a related 4-year college degree (or work experience equivalent)
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience with CAT EPG design systems including generators, switchgear, Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and
  • load banks.
  • Minimum 1 years of experience with CAT software programs such as TMI, Design Pro, Right Size, and Power Net.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with Cogeneration System design, integration, operation, and financial returns.
  • Must be able to communicate (speak, read, comprehend, write) in English.
