Jr. ESME Mechanical Design Engineer - Onsite
Job Summary
GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking a Jr. ESME Mechanical Design Engineer with interest in Formula 1 to join our innovative engineering team in Concord, NC. This entry-level role supports the mechanical design, packaging, and integration of the Energy Store (ES) Main Enclosure (ESME) system for F1 power units. The engineer will assist in developing compact, lightweight, high-reliability mechanical solutions that meet stringent FIA regulations and application requirements for thermal management, vibration resistance, crash protection, and reliable energy storage.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support mechanical design of ESME housing, cell retention, thermal interfaces, mounts, and crash structures under senior guidance.
  • Create 3D CAD models and assemblies using NX or equivalent, adhering to F1 packaging and mass constraints.
  • Assist with structural FEA for static, dynamic, and thermal loads using ANSYS tools.
  • Collaborate with battery, electronics, thermal, and integration teams to aid ESME optimization.
  • Help with prototype build, assembly, and testing (dyno, vibration, thermal cycling).
  • Contribute to DFMs with suppliers for performance, manufacturability, and compliance.
  • Document designs, analyses, and BOMs for reviews.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 0-2 years of mechanical design experience; internship or project experience in motorsport, hybrid systems, or high-performance preferred.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (NX, SolidWorks, or Catia) for assemblies.
  • Basic knowledge of FEA, vibration, and thermal analysis for packaging.
  • Understanding of materials (composites, alloys) and processes (additive, machining).
