Entry Level Computer Network Architect information

Is network architect in demand?

Network architects are in high demand due to the increasing need for secure and efficient computer networks in organizations. The role requires skills in network design, security, and familiarity with tools like Cisco or Juniper, and employment prospects are expected to grow faster than average in the coming years.

How can I get into networking with no experience?

Entry level computer network architects can start by gaining foundational knowledge through online courses, certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, and hands-on practice with networking equipment or simulators. Building a basic understanding of networking concepts and gaining practical experience can help open opportunities in the field.

How do I become a computer network architect?

To become a computer network architect, you typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Gaining experience with network design, administration, and security, along with certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP, can improve job prospects and demonstrate expertise in network architecture and related tools.

What is the salary of a computer network architect?

A computer network architect's salary typically ranges from $70,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level positions usually start around $70,000, while experienced professionals with specialized skills can earn higher salaries.

What is the difference between Entry Level Computer Network Architect vs Network Engineer?

AspectEntry Level Computer Network ArchitectNetwork Engineer
Required CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning and planning network infrastructure, often in office or lab settingsImplementing, configuring, and maintaining networks, often in operational environments
Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, consulting, large organizationsTelecom, IT services, corporate networks

Both roles often require similar certifications like CCNA and involve working with network hardware and protocols. However, an Entry Level Computer Network Architect focuses on designing network solutions, while a Network Engineer primarily implements and maintains those networks. The architect role is more planning-oriented, whereas the engineer role is more operational.

Job description

Opportunity
PeopleTec is currently seeking a Junior MBSE Engineer (Digital Backbone / Aviation Systems) to support our Huntsville, AL location.
We are supporting the integration, verification, and test of next-generation aviation and mission systems utilizing deterministic Ethernet-based Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), Digital Backbone (DBB), and Data Distribution System (DDS) architectures within Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL), and digital engineering environments.
We are seeking an early-career Systems Engineer with a passion for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), digital engineering, and aviation mission systems. This position provides an opportunity to work alongside systems, software, network, cybersecurity, and avionics engineers supporting the design, modeling, integration, and validation of complex aviation architectures utilizing SysML and modern MBSE methodologies.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing system models, analyzing requirements, and supporting architecture development using tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler and MagicDraw. Candidates should be interested in supporting MOSA-aligned aviation systems and digital backbone modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain SysML-based system models supporting aviation mission systems, digital backbone architectures, and system integration activities.
  • Support requirements analysis, requirements decomposition, traceability, verification, and validation activities within MBSE environments.
  • Assist with development of system architectures, operational views, interface definitions, and design artifacts.
  • Support modeling and analysis of TSN, DBB, DDS, and other aviation networking and mission system technologies.
  • Develop Component Design Models (CDMs), System Design Models (SDMs), and architecture artifacts supporting MOSA-aligned system development.
  • Participate in system design reviews, architecture reviews, integration activities, and technical interchange meetings.
  • Collaborate with software, network, cybersecurity, avionics, and test engineering teams to ensure model fidelity and requirements traceability.
  • Support digital engineering initiatives including digital thread, digital twin, and model-based verification approaches.
  • Produce technical documentation, engineering artifacts, presentations, and reports supporting customer and internal engineering activities.
  • Support demonstrations, customer engagements, and system integration events.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
  • 2-5 years of experience in Systems Engineering, MBSE, Digital Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical disciplines through professional work, internships, research, or academic projects.
  • Familiarity with SysML and MBSE concepts including requirements modeling, behavior modeling, structural modeling, and traceability.
  • Experience using MBSE tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and the systems development lifecycle.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Interest in aviation systems, mission systems integration, digital engineering, or model-based development approaches.
  • Familiarity with Git, configuration management, or collaborative engineering environments is desired.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10%.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • An active DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have an active Secret clearance upon hire, and the ability to maintain this level of clearance during their employment.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM discipline.

Desired Skills:
  • Familiarity with Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), Digital Backbone (DBB), Data Distribution Service (DDS), or distributed mission system architectures.
  • Experience with Army, DoD, aviation, or mission systems programs.
Familiarity with MOSA, FACE, Future Vertical Lift (FVL), Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA), or digital backbone initiatives.
  • Exposure to Component Design Models (CDMs), System Design Models (SDMs), architecture frameworks, or digital engineering governance.
  • Knowledge of avionics standards including DO-178C, DO-254, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, ARINC 653, ARINC 661, or ARINC 664 (AFDX).
