Department: Learning Commons and Open Labs

General Statement of Job

The Technology Specialist assists in the day-to-day operations in the Learning Commons and Open Labs; assists students, monitors lab facilities, and implements lab guidelines to maintain a professional environment that is conducive to learning at all times. The Technology Specialist works collaboratively with supervisors to implement software and hardware upgrades, submits detailed attendance reports, and communicates issues of concern to the Director of Learning Commons and Open Labs and/or designee.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Assists students in the use of multimedia equipment and software.
  • Provides and promotes excellent customer service.
  • Assists students with user ID and password reset.
  • Assists in overseeing the Learning Commons and Open Labs operations.
  • Maintains proper operation of lab equipment, and reports/documents relevant matters to Director and/or designee.
  • Assists with supervision of staff and implementation of guidelines.
  • Addresses student complaints and concerns to Director and/or designee.
  • Performs routine and assigned activities, working collaboratively with supervisors, in the Learning Commons and Open Labs.
  • Assists in developing marketing materials using graphic design software to develop flyers, banners, brochures, digital media and posters to promote services at the Learning Commons and Open Labs.
  • Develops professional development training for staff.
  • Prepares weekly and monthly lab attendance reports utilizing attendance software.
  • Distributes interdepartmental mail and sensitive documents.
  • Recommends supplies, computers, and equipment.
  • Updates inventory utilizing specialized software.
  • Collaborates with supervisors and Information Technology personnel to maintain equipment and software.
  • Maintains lab facilities and submits service tickets to appropriate departments.
  • Secures and provides maintenance to the assigned area(s) including furniture, equipment, supplies and peripherals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in computer lab setting or related area, preferred.
  • Experience in an educational setting, preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of personal computers, and multimedia software and other audio-visual and presentational technology.
  • Proficient in the use of Autodesk, Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign Adobe Premier, etc.), and statistical software.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Must be willing to work various hours, rotating shifts and weekends during the Learning Commons and Open Labs hours of operation from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
