Job description

SUMMARY

The Engineer - Substation Systems Support is responsible for providing support for business objectives through the following specialty areas: Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), telecom, fiber communication, control systems, communication systems, cyber security, physical security systems such as Physical Access Control and Video Management Systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs substation physical security systems.
  • Provides technical support to field personnel and contractors in the installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of SCADA systems, fiber optics, Ethernet networking, serial communication and physical security systems.
  • Evaluates, develops, and implements new components, software, and processes to support SCADA, ethernet/serial communications, access control and surveillance systems.
  • Collaborates with other engineers, departments and utilities to maintain project schedules.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions to increase professional knowledge and skills.
  • Performs NERC CIP compliance activities for department assets.
  • Develops and maintains effective policies, procedures and work instructions.
  • Maintains electronic records pertaining to all physical security applications in accordance with policy.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with major in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering is preferred or relevant, equivalent experience and/or education.
  • Minimum Work Experience Required:
    • Engineer, Associate: No work experience required.
    • Engineer (Intermediate): Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
    • Engineer, Senior: Minimum of six (6) years of related experience. 
  • Co-op/Intern experience at a utility preferred. 
  • Proficient knowledge of computer systems, operating systems and computer hardware. 
  • Sound analytical, problem-solving, organizational and documentation skills.
  • Self-motivated to learn and understand varying computer/control system architectures and software
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors and individuals inside and outside of the Company.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Above average knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access).
  • Ability to learn and utilize job specific software.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot security components and make recommendations to resolve problems. 
  • Basic understanding of physical security systems preferred.
  • Basic understanding of optical transport and wireless systems technologies, including both TDM and IP based communication systems preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA protocols, networking and serial communication standards preferred.
  • Familiar with electric drawings, symbology and documentation preferred.
