Job description

Job Title: Machinist – Days (CNC Lathe and Mill Operator)

Job Description

This role involves setting up and operating 3-axis CNC lathes and mills to produce high-volume precision parts used in manufacturing finished products. You will run production machining operations, primarily working with iron, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and occasionally plastics. The position requires you to select and run programs based on orders and diagrams, inspect parts using precision measuring tools, and ideally perform machine setups and tooling changes in a climate-controlled shop on a day shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate 3-axis CNC lathes and mills to produce high-volume production parts.
  • Select appropriate CNC programs for each part based on orders, diagrams, and basic blueprints.
  • Load raw materials such as iron, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and occasional plastics into machines.
  • Perform 2 to 3 machine setups per day, including adjusting fixtures, tooling, and offsets as needed.
  • Run CNC machines safely and efficiently, monitoring operations and making adjustments to maintain quality and throughput.
  • Inspect parts as they come off the machine using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools down to 0.0001 inch.
  • Verify that finished parts meet dimensional and quality requirements according to specifications and blueprints.
  • Change out tooling as needed to support different jobs and maintain optimal machine performance.
  • Perform basic edits to CNC programs, including G-code and M-code adjustments, when required (if experienced).
  • Operate related equipment such as drill presses and shears as part of the machining process.
  • Follow production schedules and work instructions to meet daily and weekly output goals.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in a climate-controlled machine shop.
  • Lift and move materials and parts up to 40 lbs in the course of daily work.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to troubleshoot issues and improve processes.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience operating CNC machines, including lathes and/or mills.
  • Hands-on experience running 3-axis CNC equipment in a production environment.
  • Ability to use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to check parts down to 0.0001 inch.
  • Basic ability to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams for machining operations.
  • Experience loading materials into CNC machines, selecting the correct program, and running parts.
  • Capability to perform basic CNC machine setup tasks and support 2 to 3 setups per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs safely and repeatedly during the shift.
  • Familiarity with general machine operation, including lathe and mill work.
  • Comfort working with metals such as iron, brass, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Willingness to work first shift hours and occasional overtime, including some Saturdays.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience performing full CNC setups, including fixturing, tooling selection, and offset adjustments.
  • Ability to change over tooling efficiently between jobs to support high-volume production.
  • Manual machining experience, including operation of manual lathes, mills, and related equipment.
  • Ability to edit G-code and M-code to fine-tune programs and improve machining performance (considered a plus).
  • Experience operating drill presses, shears, and other shop equipment.
  • Exposure to a climate-controlled machine shop environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts.
  • Solid mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills in a production machining setting.
