Entry Level Civil Engineering Data Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Civil Engineering Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Civil Engineering Data Scientist, you need a solid grasp of civil engineering fundamentals, statistics, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering or data science degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as Python, MATLAB, AutoCAD, and data visualization platforms, as well as experience with databases and possibly certifications in data analytics, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and communication skills make candidates stand out in this multidisciplinary role. These skills are crucial for accurately interpreting engineering data, supporting infrastructure decision-making, and effectively conveying insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

How do entry-level civil engineering data scientists typically collaborate with engineering teams on infrastructure projects?

Entry-level civil engineering data scientists often work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to collect, analyze, and interpret large datasets related to infrastructure projects. They support decision-making by creating predictive models, visualizations, and reports that inform project design, construction, and maintenance. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings, sharing insights with engineers and project managers, and ensuring that data-driven recommendations align with technical and regulatory requirements. This partnership helps bridge the gap between data science and practical engineering solutions.

What is the difference between Entry Level Civil Engineering Data Science vs Entry Level Civil Engineering?

AspectEntry Level Civil Engineering Data ScienceEntry Level Civil Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, Data Science, or related field; knowledge of programming and data analysisBachelor's in Civil Engineering or related field; engineering fundamentals
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, consulting agencies, government agencies with data analysis focusConstruction sites, design offices, infrastructure projects
Employer & Industry UsageUtilized in infrastructure planning, data-driven decision making, modelingDesign, construction, and maintenance of civil infrastructure

Entry Level Civil Engineering Data Science combines civil engineering fundamentals with data analysis skills, focusing on data-driven project optimization. In contrast, Entry Level Civil Engineering emphasizes traditional engineering design and construction. Both roles require a bachelor's degree, but the data science role demands additional programming and analytical skills, often working in environments that leverage data for infrastructure planning and management.

Is 30 too late for data science?

Entry level civil engineering data science roles typically value skills and relevant experience over age. Many professionals transition into data science later in their careers by acquiring programming, statistical, and data analysis skills through courses or certifications, making 30 not too late to start in this field.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

Entry level civil engineering data science roles typically do not pay $500,000 annually; such high salaries are usually associated with senior positions, specialized consulting, or executive roles. Most civil engineers earn between $60,000 and $120,000 per year, with higher earnings possible through experience, advanced skills, or management responsibilities.

Can I get a data scientist job with no experience?

Entry level civil engineering data science roles typically require some foundational knowledge in data analysis, programming (such as Python or R), and understanding of civil engineering concepts. While prior experience is not always mandatory, demonstrating relevant skills through projects, certifications, or coursework can improve chances of securing such positions.

What is an entry level civil engineering data science job?

An entry level civil engineering data science job involves using data analysis and computational tools to solve problems related to civil engineering, such as infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance. Professionals in this role work with large datasets from sensors, surveys, and simulations to help inform decisions about projects like roads, bridges, and buildings. They often use programming languages like Python or R and work with statistical methods, machine learning, and data visualization. This role is ideal for recent graduates with skills in both civil engineering fundamentals and data science techniques.

Can a civil engineer become a data scientist?

A civil engineer can become a data scientist by acquiring skills in programming, statistics, and data analysis tools such as Python, R, and SQL. Transitioning often involves additional training or education in data science concepts and gaining experience with machine learning and data visualization. Many professionals successfully make this shift by leveraging their analytical background and pursuing relevant certifications or courses.

Entry Level Civil Engineer
Department: Civil/Municipal
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Neptune
Compensation: $60,000 - $75,000 / year
Description
Artheon is seeking talented professionals to join our growing team in support of diverse engineering and environmental projects. Whether your background is in civil engineering, environmental science, or infrastructure design, this is a great opportunity to contribute to meaningful work in a collaborative and innovative environment.
About Artheon
Artheon is a trusted engineering and consulting firm offering services that rival large organizations while maintaining the personalized client relationships of a boutique firm. With expertise spanning civil/site engineering, environmental permitting, transportation infrastructure, construction management, and advanced surveying technologies, we are committed to delivering high-quality, timely solutions to local, state, and federal clients.
About this role
This position is part of Artheon's long-term team growth strategy. We hire early-career engineers, invest in their development, and promote from within. As an Associate Engineer, you'll gain exposure to a wide range of municipal engineering disciplines including transportation, water and wastewater, and infrastructure while learning how projects move from planning and review through construction and completion.
If you're curious, detail-oriented, and interested in understanding how engineering decisions shape communities, this role offers a strong foundation for your career.
Grow Your Career with Blueprint
This role includes a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, participants take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery - including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises. The program covers topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals, and concludes with an in-person capstone event where participants present their work and outline goals for the year ahead.
Your Future Starts With A Plan.
Responsibilities
Municipal Review & Technical Analysis
  • Review site plans, subdivision and land development applications, and capital improvement projects for compliance with municipal ordinances, standards, and regulations
  • Support planning board and zoning board reviews by preparing technical comments and reports
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with boards, applicants, inspectors, and internal team members

Engineering & Design Exposure
  • Assist with design work on municipal infrastructure projects such as roadway improvements, including preparation of plans and specifications
  • Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis under the guidance of senior engineers

Construction Administration
  • Support construction-phase activities, including coordination with inspectors and review of field conditions
  • Gain exposure to how projects are implemented and resolved in real-world conditions

Team Collaboration & Development
  • Work closely with experienced engineers (including recently licensed PEs) who provide day-to-day guidance and mentorship
  • Participate in Artheon's peer mentor program and professional development initiatives

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or scheduled to take the EIT exam
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort participating in public meetings
  • Interest in and commitment to municipal engineering work
  • Willingness to work from and commit to the Neptune/Tinton Falls, NJ office

Preferred Qualifications
  • Internship or co-op experience in civil or municipal engineering
  • Familiarity with municipal infrastructure, transportation, or water/wastewater projects
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar engineering software

Benefits
The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
Artheon offers a competitive compensation package including medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage, 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, educational assistance program and paid time off/parental leave.
