Entry Level Circuit Designer information

What does an entry level circuit designer do?

An entry level circuit designer is responsible for assisting in the creation and development of electronic circuits used in devices and systems. Their tasks typically include drafting circuit schematics, working with simulation software, assembling and testing prototypes, and troubleshooting basic design issues. They often collaborate with more experienced engineers and follow detailed instructions to ensure circuits meet specified requirements. Entry level circuit designers play a key role in supporting the design process and gaining hands-on experience in the electronics field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level circuit designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Circuit Designer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and schematic design, usually supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or KiCad, and understanding of simulation software are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate circuit designs, efficient project collaboration, and successful integration into engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level circuit designers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level circuit designers often face challenges such as understanding complex design requirements, keeping up with rapidly evolving technology, and translating theoretical knowledge into practical applications. Additionally, they may need to adapt to industry-standard design tools like Cadence or Altium and learn to work effectively within cross-functional teams, including engineers and manufacturing specialists. Seeking mentorship, actively participating in design reviews, and dedicating time to hands-on practice with design software can help overcome these initial hurdles and accelerate professional growth.

What is the difference between Entry Level Circuit Designer vs Electronics Technician?

AspectEntry Level Circuit DesignerElectronics Technician
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related fieldAssociate's degree or technical certification in electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD software, collaborative teamsManufacturing floors, repair shops, testing labs
Industry UsageProduct development, circuit design, prototypingMaintenance, troubleshooting, assembly

While both roles involve working with electronic systems, Entry Level Circuit Designers focus on creating and developing circuit designs using CAD tools, often in a collaborative environment. Electronics Technicians primarily handle testing, repairing, and maintaining electronic equipment. The roles differ in their focus, with designers emphasizing design and development, and technicians concentrating on implementation and troubleshooting.

Job Description

The Role

Join our Vehicle Software and Electronics Engineering organization as a Wireless RF Design & Validation Engineer, where you will contribute to the development and deployment of wireless connectivity hardware for next-generation vehicles. Working with experienced RF, antenna, hardware, software, mechanical, and systems engineers, you will apply fundamentals in radio frequency circuits, electromagnetics, antenna design, and wireless communications to help deliver reliable cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS, UWB, and other connected-vehicle technologies.

This is an opportunity for a new graduate to build practical experience across RF design, electromagnetic simulation, prototype development, laboratory measurement, and vehicle-level integration. You willparticipatein an iterative engineering process that connects requirements, simulation, hardware, testing, troubleshooting, and design improvement.

WhatYou'llDo

  • Assistwith the design, analysis, simulation, prototyping, and validation of RF circuits and antenna subsystems for automotive connectivity modules.

  • Develop and evaluate RF circuit designs involving transmission lines, impedance matching, filters, amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, switches, couplers, and other RF front-end components under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Create and refine antenna models for embedded and vehicle-integrated wireless systems, considering frequency coverage, bandwidth, impedance match, gain, efficiency, radiation patterns, polarization, coupling, isolation, packaging, and manufacturability.

  • Use circuit, system, and electromagnetic simulation tools to perform design trade studies, parametric sweeps, optimization, and simulation-to-test correlation. Tools may include Keysight ADS, Ansys HFSS, CST Studio Suite, FEKO, MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, or equivalent platforms.

  • Support RF schematic development, componentselection, PCB layout reviews, and design reviews, with attention to grounding, shielding, isolation, signal integrity, decoupling, return-current paths, and minimizing unwanted coupling or crosstalk.

  • Build andmodifyprototypes, fixtures, cables, and RF signal paths; support board bring-up and subsystem integration from the PCB through enclosure and vehicle levels.

  • Perform conducted and over-the-air RF measurements using equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, oscilloscopes, near-field probes, and wireless test systems.

  • Execute sensitivity, antenna performance, coexistence, isolation, desense, emissions, and other RF validation activities for cellular, 5G/LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS, UWB, and related technologies.

  • Analyze measurement data, identifyperformance trends and failure modes, compare results with simulations and requirements, and recommend design changes oradditionalexperiments.

  • Support root-cause investigations for RF issues caused by antennas, PCB layout, processors, memory devices, power converters, displays, clocking circuits, communication interfaces, shielding, grounding, or mechanical integration.

  • Develop ormaintainPython, MATLAB, or similar scripts for test automation, data reduction, visualization, calibration checks, and repeatability analysis.

  • Develop, execute, and document test plans, procedures, configurations, results, technical recommendations, and lessons learned.

  • Support EMC/EMI, FCC, CE, OEM, and other applicable regulatory or pre-compliance activities.

  • Collaborate with hardware, RF, antenna, PCB layout, mechanical, software, systems, manufacturing, supplier, and test-partner teams to resolve issues and deliver robust designs.
