Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

The Senior Project Controls Specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining a centralized project controls function supporting a portfolio of capital projects for the Pinto Valley Engineering Projects Group. This role oversees cost reporting, forecast consolidation, accrual management, and department-level cash flow projections while developing and maintaining an integrated Master Project Schedule. The position serves as a key partner to Project Managers by ensuring consistent, accurate, and timely project data, enabling proactive decision-making and effective portfolio management.

  • Maintain monthly project cost reports for the Engineering Projects Group.
  • Review actual realized costs from the accounting team, solicit forecasts and schedule information from the department Project Managers.
  • Maintain and update site Capital forecasting sheets.
  • Collect and submit monthly department accruals.
  • Perform variance analysis, develop Cash Flow projections, standardize monthly cost reports, and present findings to the Pinto Valley Senior Leadership team.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio level Master Project Schedule.
  • Develop and maintain Executive Summary Schedule (Level 1) for department portfolio. Key milestones will be linked across all projects (Engineering, Funding Approvals, Procurement, Construction…) and aligned with project forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain Project Coordination Schedule (Level 3) for budgeted Capital and approved Unbudgeted Capital.
  • Determine resource conflicts and critical path impacts across projects.
  • Exemplify the Capstone Copper Values in all efforts and interactions while complying with all MSHA safety regulations and Pinto Valley Mine policies and procedures.
  • Develop a basic understanding of contracts, purchase order agreements, AFE approval and other Capstone financial approval processes.
  • Responsible for but not limited to all tasks/duties assigned or required.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in the management of schedules and budgets.
  • Project Scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 or MS Project.


Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Engineering or related years of experience
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting, project controls, cost engineering, project planning or related field

Preferred:

  • 3-5 years supporting multi-project or program-level portfolios
  • Demonstrated experience working with capital projects in industrial, infrastructure, mining or other heavy construction environments
