Essential Functions
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
  • Abstracts all primary sites for Analytic and Non-Analytic cases into NF-KACI Oncology software utilizing Pathology Reports, Radiation Oncology (ARIA), and EMRs (EPIC, ModMed Dermatology).
  • Employs Defensive Abstracting Techniques to support text and data elements. Employs approved edits software to ensure zero (0) errors to New York State Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Database (NCDB) when validating an abstract.
  • Abstracts a comprehensive data set in a timely manner including data fields not typical of a comprehensive data set.
  • Abstracts RCRS cases to the fullest ability at the time of abstraction.
  • Uses reportable lists and applies skillful judgment in complicated case identification. Runs a computerized case finding program to download new cases.
  • Performs quality editing of cases entered through the case finding program. Differentiates between and categorizes new cancer cases, recurrent cancer cases and multiple primary cases.
  • Reviews and analyzes hospital records, computerized reports and other medical reports for relevant cancer data; determines and classifies demographics, primary site, histology, stage and treatment on all cancer sites.
  • Uses AJCC 8th Edition TNM Stage Manual and Version 9 TNM Stage Manual, ICD-O database/manual, SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual, SSDI Manual, Hematopoietic Database, SEER*Rx, Solid Tumor Rules, Grade Manual, Cancer Forum, and any other relevant manuals to ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for updating treatment information that is gathered after the case has been abstracted.
  • Responsible for collecting, analyzing and coding patterns of recurrence in cancer patients treated initially for cure, with identification of sites and dates of recurrent cancer and subsequent treatment; determines and codes cause of death in patients who have expired.
  • Participate in Quality Review of Abstracts.
  • Participates in department projects when assigned.
  • Attend Virtual Cancer Conferences when assigned. Patients discussed shall be abstracted with all information at time of presentation. Synopsis of discussion to assist with completing the abstract as well as identify the patient as being discussed at cancer conferences shall be done at time of presentation.
  • Attend Department Meetings. When requested, provide a presentation to be discussed.
  • Uses Windows applications and interfaces with Information Systems for data input, analysis and retrieval.
  • Researches and prepares complicated follow-up histories for cancer patients, documenting disease status, condition and treatment for the duration of the patient's life span.
  • Communicate by telephone, email, and fax with physicians, hospitals, and other health institutions to obtain necessary follow-up information.
  • Uses Internet resources to obtain follow-up on patients (Social Security Death Index, telephone directories, and newspaper obituaries).
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Associate Degree Completion of the coursework for an NCRA-accredited Associate's Degree in Cancer Registry Management or completion of a minimum of an Associate's Degree in any field or the equivalent (60 college-level credits), and completion of the coursework for an NCRA-accredited Certificate in Cancer Registry Management or completion of a minimum of an Associate's Degree in any field or the equivalent (60 college-level credits), and two semesters of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology. Required or
  • 1-3 years Must have experience working with computers for data entry and report preparation; able to use the internet Required
  • Thorough knowledge of ACOS/CoC and state registry data collection requirements, including RCRS. (High proficiency)
  • Must have formal course work in knowledge of anatomy and physiology or equivalent, and medical terminology. (Medium proficiency)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office - including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point. (High proficiency)

  • NCRA Oncology Data Specialist - National Cancer Registrars Association ODS by National Cancer Registry Association (NRCA) Certified or Eligible Upon Hire Preferred
