Job description

Duration: 2 - 6 Months

Shift Details: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Description of duties:

  • Responsible for the collection of water quality samples from a variety of sources around the facility – seawater pipelines, anchialine ponds, client discharge sites, groundwater monitoring wells, and nearshore ocean transect sites.
  • Collect in-situ field parameters of water samples
  • Recording data on field sheets and entering data into Microsoft Excel databases
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures and established Standard Methods to analyze water quality samples for general "wet chemistry” parameters in the laboratory (i.e. turbidity, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, and chlorophyll-a analysis)
  • Perform calibration and verification checks of instrumentation and meters
  • Perform routine laboratory duties such as glassware washing, bottle preparation, sample preparation
  • The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) is an attached State agency to the Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism.NELHA is seeking temporary employment for a Water Quality Technician. The Water Quality Technician will be primarily tasked with collecting water quality samples from around the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park to support the Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) at NELHA. Additional duties include routine and entry level tasks within the Water Quality Laboratory. Field sampling and familiarity with an analytical laboratory setting is preferred.

Equipment to be used:

  • Minimum field sampling equipment: YSI multiparameter meter (i.e. temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ORP), submersible pumps, John Deere Gator vehicle, peristaltic pump, various buckets and bottles for sample collection, comfort being on a boat.
    Minimum laboratory equipment includes: YSI meter, turbidimeter, vacuum filtration apparatus, analytical balance, drying oven, incubator, pipettes, laboratory glassware, autoclave, fume hood
    Minimum Office equipment: computer, telephone, printer

Minimum knowledge, skills and education and/or experience

  • To be considered, candidate shall have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with an emphasis in chemistry, biology, environmental science, marine science, or closely related field. Familiarity with and ability to follow standard laboratory and field sampling protocols and procedures is required.

Minimum computer software skills/knowledge to be used

  • Computer skills include usage of databases and spreadsheets. Ability to use Microsoft Excel accurately enter and record data. Familiarity with the full Microsoft Suite (including Outlook, Excel and Word) and Adobe Acrobat (for basic pdf functions) is also preferred.

Job related attire

  • Appropriate attire for outdoor environmental field sampling and laboratory setting (i.e. closed toe shoes, sun protection, etc)
