Job description

Position Purpose:   

Signature Science is seeking a highly motivated entry-level DNA Analyst to support forensic SNP laboratory operations within the Human Signatures Laboratory in Charlottesville, VA. This position will operate as part of a dynamic laboratory team responsible for forensic DNA sample processing, analysis, interpretation, and reporting in support of client casework and laboratory initiatives. The selected candidate will assist with the examination, processing, and testing of forensic evidence while adhering to applicable quality assurance standards, laboratory SOPs, accreditation requirements, and company policies. Responsibilities may also include participation in developmental, research, and validation activities associated with emerging forensic DNA technologies and massively parallel sequencing (MPS) workflows.  The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and capable of working effectively in a fast-paced forensic laboratory environment focused on quality, timeliness, and customer service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory work while wearing appropriate PPE and following contamination control procedures
  • Adhere to proper handling and safeguarding procedures for forensic evidence, DNA samples, and associated data.
  • Perform forensic DNA sample processing using established laboratory procedures.
  • Conduct DNA extraction, quantification, library preparation, sequencing preparation, and downstream analysis using validated forensic workflows and instrumentation.
  • Assist with forensic SNP analysis workflows and massively parallel sequencing (MPS) methodologies.
  • Operate and maintain scientific instrumentation including Real-Time PCR instruments, thermocyclers, sequencing platforms, and associated laboratory equipment.
  • Perform data review, interpretation, and documentation in accordance with laboratory procedures and training level.
  • Assist with statistical evaluation and interpretation of forensic SNP results and sequencing data.
  • Prepare technical documentation and draft forensic reports.
  • Participate in technical reviews, quality assurance activities, and routine laboratory maintenance tasks.
  • Support validation and developmental studies for new forensic DNA methods, instrumentation, sequencing technologies, and software platforms.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation and complete assigned work within established timelines.
  • Communicate technical findings effectively with laboratory staff and management.
  • Assist other laboratory personnel as needed to support changing operational priorities and workload demands.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed technical procedures and SOPs.
  •  Basic understanding of molecular biology, genetics, genomics, and forensic DNA principles.
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory practices and scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience with or exposure to massively parallel sequencing (MPS), next-generation sequencing (NGS), or genomic workflows preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to learn and utilize laboratory software, sequencing analysis platforms, and bioinformatics tools.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Forensic Science, or a related natural science field required.
  •  Candidates must meet applicable FBI QAS educational requirements for forensic DNA analysts or be capable of meeting those requirements through documented coursework and training.

Clearance: 

This position requires that the candidate be willing and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Candidates with an active security clearance will receive preference.

Working Conditions/ Equipment: 

Must work in a laboratory environment that requires wearing PPE and standing for extended periods of time. Required to enter data and write reports by typing on a computer. Will have potential contact with hazardous materials, including biological fluids and must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance and 40 pounds with assistance to handle evidence.

Minimal travel is required for this position.
