Job Description

Process Technician - High Voltage Battery (HV) - Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS)

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successfulcandidate is expected to report to Pontiac and/or Warren on a full-time basis, 5 days per week.

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

In this hands-on role, you will support GM's EV battery engineering efforts by safely managing the handling, movement, and teardown of Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems (RESS), also known as High-Voltage Battery Packs. As part of the RESS Root Cause team, you will play a critical role in enabling failure analysis, quality investigations, and continuous improvement by ensuring batteries are received, stabilized, processed, and prepared for diagnostics with precision, speed, and strict adherence to safety standards.

What You'll Do

  • Execute safe, compliant handling of high-voltage EV battery systems, including shipping, receiving, storage, crating/uncrating, and initial inspections to support engineering investigations.

  • Coordinate and perform movement of large, high-value HV battery assemblies using forklifts, cranes, and rigging equipment, ensuring proper handling and documentation.

  • Support root cause analysis by preparing batteries for teardown, assisting with disassembly, and capturing observations and data for engineering teams.

  • Manage inventory accuracy and material traceability, including tracking, staging, and shipping components to suppliers for further analysis.

  • Partner closely with engineering, lab, and logistics teams to ensure timely processing and flow of battery systems through the facility.

  • Document work performed, maintain detailed records, and clearly communicate findings to engineering stakeholders.

  • Contribute to and improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), driving best practices in safety, efficiency, and quality.

  • Promote a culture of safety, organization, and continuous improvement, aligned to Business Plan Deployment goals.

  • Travel (~25%) as part of a Field Response Team to safely assess, stabilize, and disassemble battery packs at dealer locations that are unsafe to ship.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Associate degree or equivalent hands-on experience in a technical, manufacturing, or logistics environment

  • 2+ years of experience working with mechanical and/or electrical systems, ideally in a high-voltage, automotive, or industrial setting

  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical fundamentals, with the ability to follow detailed procedures in a safety-critical environment

  • Experience operating material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, rigging) and safely moving large components

  • Familiarity with inventory management, shipping/receiving processes, and basic computer tools (Microsoft Office, tracking systems)

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to document work and collaborate across technical teams

  • General awareness of hazardous materials handling and EV battery classifications

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks in an active lab or warehouse environment

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel (~25%), including air travel, to support field response activities

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Hands-on experience working with high-voltage battery systems, including handling, teardown, testing, or diagnostics

  • Knowledge of HV safety practices and certifications (e.g., High Voltage 2B, CFR 49 Hazmat)

  • Background in EV battery logistics, material handling, or lab/test environments supporting engineering teams

  • Certifications in forklift operation, crane/rigging, or hazardous materials handling

  • Experience using diagnostic tools, measurement equipment, or supporting electrical/electronics troubleshooting

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (engineering technology, electrical, mechanical, etc.)
