Description Title: Instructor, CC (Sustainable Science Management) Position Number: 0074852 Hiring Unit: Academic Affairs - STEM Department Location: Kahului, Maui Date Posted: June 15, 2026 Closing Date: July 02, 2026 Salary Information: C2, minimum $5,537 / month Monthly Type: 9 mo Tenure / Non-Tenure Track: Tenure Track Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Permanent / Temporary: Permanent Other Conditions: The position may be converted from a 9-month to an 11-month term, based on program/operational needs. This is NOT a remote position - the job requires in-person work. Position will begin Spring Semester 2027 Duties and Responsibilities: This position will teach and conduct research [MJ2] in Sustainability Science and systems thinking and dynamics[MJ3] within the University of Hawaii, Maui College (UHMC) Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Sustainable Science Management (SSM) four-year degree program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching both lower and upper-division courses, ranging from introductory to advanced levels in sustainability science and systems modeling. Instruction may also cover discipline-specific topics such as energy, resource-based economics, community development, and other areas, with an emphasis on using Hawaii, particularly Maui Island, as a model for systems-based learning. Additional duties may include providing guidance and direction for the Hulihia Center for Sustainable Systems, a recently established entity based on the UHMC campus, which offers sustainability support at the community level through the application of advanced systems thinking and dynamics.

The position may also involve working with the student sustainability club and participating in or presenting at professional, community, and statewide events. [MJ4] The position also includes responsibilities such as: Developing a new curriculum Advising and mentoring students Contributing to campus activities and serving on faculty or administrative committees Engaging in community service Maintaining a program of professional development Preparing and supporting institutional reporting processes (e.g., annual and comprehensive program reviews) Evaluating and assessing student learning and program learning outcomes Recruiting and promoting the Sustainable Science Management (SSM) program[MJ5] Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree (or anticipated completion before the hire start date) in Sustainability Science Management or Sustainability Science OR Master's degree in the sustainability field (as defined below), AND two (2) years of teaching experience in sustainability at the post-secondary level OR Master's degree in a sustainability-related field (as defined below), AND 18 graduate-level credits in Sustainability Science Management or Sustainability Science or sustainability-focused coursework. Definition of Sustainability Related Fields: Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Geography (with sustainability emphasis), Public Policy (with environmental/sustainability emphasis), or other interdisciplinary programs where sustainability-related subject matter was a primary focus of the program, as demonstrated by required coursework, program learning outcomes, or degree requirements

Note: DQ will include a Doctorate-level degree attainment Desirable Qualifications: Professional experience or higher education coursework taken in sustainable systems thinking and dynamics One (1) year or more of instructional experience at the post-secondary level, preferably within a community college or university setting. PhD in a sustainability-related field (as defined above). Experience or potential to conduct relevant scholarly and applied research.

Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting and to work with students of varied ages, cultural backgrounds, and skill levels. Experience in developing curriculum. Experience with distance education or online course delivery.

Experience teaching and working with highly diverse communities, including businesses and public/private agencies. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver distance education courses. Experience with accreditation processes.

Leadership experience in developing and evaluating lower and upper division curriculum, including course and program assessment, inter-campus articulation, and program development. Leadership experience within alternative energy industries, smart growth or advanced community planning, community-based water systems or water reuse systems, and/or other relevant sustainability-focused work. Provide one or more examples of how you have utilized your knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture while working with multicultural groups and individuals with varying academic abilities, as well as different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
