What is an entry level architect?

Entry level architecture jobs are positions for recent graduates or individuals with little to no professional experience in the architecture field. These roles often involve working under the supervision of licensed architects, assisting with drafting, modeling, research, and project documentation. Entry level architects typically use design software, help prepare presentations, and gain exposure to the various stages of architectural projects. These positions provide foundational experience and are a first step toward becoming a licensed architect.

What typical responsibilities can I expect as an entry level architect, and how much client interaction is involved?

As an entry-level architect, you will primarily support project teams by assisting with drafting, creating models, preparing presentation materials, and conducting research on building codes and materials. While direct client interaction is usually limited at this stage, you may attend meetings to take notes or observe the process, which helps you learn how to translate client needs into design solutions. Over time, as you gain experience and demonstrate your abilities, your responsibilities and opportunities for client engagement will increase. Working closely with senior architects and other team members is common, and collaboration is key to learning and growing in the field.

Both roles require similar educational credentials, but Junior Architects usually have some practical experience and are progressing toward full licensure.

How to get a job in entry level architecture with no experience?

To secure an entry-level architecture position with no experience, focus on building a strong portfolio showcasing academic projects and skills in design software like AutoCAD or Revit. Internships, volunteering, or apprenticeships can provide practical experience, and obtaining relevant certifications or a degree in architecture can improve your chances. Networking with professionals and applying to firms that hire entry-level candidates also help start your career.

What do entry level architects do?

Entry level architects assist in designing and developing building plans, creating drawings, and preparing construction documents under the supervision of experienced architects. They often use CAD software, conduct site visits, and support project coordination to gain practical experience in architectural projects.
