Basic Function

The Electrical Engineer is an entry-level position within the Sustaining Engineering team. This team is responsible for supporting and maintaining the electronic hardware and firmware used in released Brooks Instrument products.

Working with guidance from experienced engineers, this individual will assist with circuit design, embedded software development, product testing, troubleshooting, and engineering documentation. The position provides an opportunity to develop technical skills while collaborating with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams.

The successful candidate will demonstrate curiosity, initiative, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. They should possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be comfortable supporting multiple assignments in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the design, testing, support, and maintenance of embedded hardware and firmware used in flow and pressure-control products.

  • Support analog and digital circuit design activities, including power-supply, voltage, current input/output, microprocessor, and peripheral circuitry.

  • Use engineering design tools to create or modify schematics and perform basic circuit simulations.

  • Assist with printed circuit board layout activities, including reviewing designs for electrical and spatial requirements.

  • Develop, modify, and test embedded software under the guidance of experienced engineers.

  • Perform laboratory testing using standard electronic test equipment, such as power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and function generators.

  • Support product troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action activities.

  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, test reports, and other design documentation.

  • Assist with preliminary product testing and activities related to regulatory or agency approvals, including CE, UL, and RoHS requirements.

  • Participate in design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams to address product, manufacturing, and customer needs.

  • Manage multiple assignments with appropriate guidance while meeting established schedules and project requirements.

  • Communicate technical information clearly through verbal discussions, written reports, and presentations.

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Foundational knowledge of analog and digital circuit design.

  • Basic understanding of embedded electronics, microprocessors, and electronic hardware development.

  • Familiarity with schematic capture, circuit simulation, or PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or SPICE is preferred.

  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory equipment, including power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and function generators.

  • Basic programming ability in C and/or C++ through coursework, internships, co-ops, or professional experience.

  • Exposure to embedded software development tools, ARM-based processors, or STM32 processors is a plus.

  • Familiarity with software version control, issue-tracking systems, unit testing, or code-coverage methods is a plus.

  • Exposure to industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT, RS485, Profibus, Modbus, DeviceNet, or Foundation Fieldbus is a plus but not required.

  • Familiarity with MATLAB, Simulink, Embedded Coder, or other system-modeling tools is a plus.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to learn new technologies, tools, and processes.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Effective verbal and written English communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline required.

  • Zero to three years of relevant engineering experience.

  • Relevant internships, co-op assignments, laboratory experience, senior design projects, research, or other academic project experience will be considered.

  • Experience or academic exposure involving embedded hardware, embedded software, circuit design, PCB design, or electronic product testing is preferred.

  • Experience with flow-control systems, industrial instrumentation, or other control systems is a plus but not required.
