GIS Technician I (Aviation Operations / UAS Support)

Location: Atlanta, GA

Contract- 1 Year

Client- Southern Company

Position Overview

We are seeking a GIS Technician I to support our Distribution and Aviation Operations team. While the title is GIS-focused, this position will also integrate aspects of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and aviation operations, supporting data collection and mapping for utility infrastructure. Candidates with backgrounds in Aviation Management, Flight Dispatch, UAS Operations, or GIS are encouraged to apply.

This role involves managing and maintaining geospatial data, assisting with UAS flight planning, and supporting data integration into our GIS platforms. A strong understanding of aviation safety, flight operations, and weather will be a valuable asset.


Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, compile, and maintain geographic data related to power distribution systems, including poles, transformers, and overhead/underground assets.

  • Assist with UAS data integration into GIS systems; coordinate mapping for aerial inspections and asset monitoring.

  • Prepare and update maps, diagrams, and reports using GIS tools.

  • Support engineers and field crews with spatial data and mapping deliverables.

  • Perform data validation, cleanup, and quality assurance to ensure geospatial accuracy.

  • Assist in UAS flight planning and operations, including weather checks, crew coordination, and documentation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, planning, aviation) to verify asset data and support project planning.

  • Maintain thorough documentation of GIS and UAS data processes and updates.

  • Adhere to all safety, aviation, and utility compliance standards during operations.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Aviation Management, Geospatial Science, or a related field.

  • UAS, Aviation Operations, or GIS certificates preferred.

Experience:

  • 0–2 years of relevant work in GIS, UAS operations, or aviation support.

  • Hands-on familiarity with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or other mapping tools.


Preferred Credentials
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

  • Private or Commercial Pilot License

  • Experience with Aviation Safety, Weather Analysis, and Crew Resource Management (CRM)

  • Knowledge of FAA and UAS operational regulations

  • Understanding of aviation dispatch or flight operations management


Technical Skills
  • Basic proficiency in GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS)

  • Familiarity with GPS data collection tools and aerial mapping systems

  • Working knowledge of data management, coordinate systems, and spatial analysis
