Work EnvironmentGarages, repair shops, fleet maintenance facilitiesSimilar; repair shops, dealerships, fleet services
Job ResponsibilitiesBasic engine repairs, diagnostics, routine maintenanceAdvanced diagnostics, complex repairs, system troubleshooting

Entry Diesel Mechanics typically perform basic repairs and maintenance, often with less experience and certification. Diesel Technicians usually handle more complex diagnostics and repairs, requiring additional skills and certifications. Both roles work in similar environments and share foundational knowledge, but Diesel Technicians generally have a higher level of expertise and responsibility.

Is 27 too late to become a mechanic?

Entry diesel mechanics can start at age 27, as many employers value skills, certifications, and hands-on experience over age. Training programs and certifications like ASE can help new entrants enter the field regardless of age, and many mechanics begin their careers later in life successfully.

How much does a 10 year diesel mechanic make?

A diesel mechanic with 10 years of experience typically earns between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on location, certifications, and employer. Experienced mechanics often have specialized skills and may earn higher wages with additional certifications or advanced tools knowledge.

What are some typical challenges an Entry Diesel Mechanic might face during their first year on the job?

As an Entry Diesel Mechanic, one common challenge is adapting to the fast-paced environment while learning to diagnose a wide variety of diesel engine issues accurately. New mechanics often need to familiarize themselves with specialized diagnostic equipment and a range of vehicle models. Additionally, working alongside experienced technicians means you'll need strong communication skills to ask questions and seek guidance when necessary. Balancing hands-on tasks with ongoing safety and technical training is also a key aspect of the learning curve.

What are Entry Diesel Mechanics?

Entry Diesel Mechanics are technicians who maintain, repair, and service diesel engines, typically found in trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles. They usually work under the supervision of experienced mechanics while learning to diagnose engine problems, perform routine maintenance, and replace faulty parts. Entry-level roles often require basic mechanical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and may involve both classroom and on-the-job training. Over time, Entry Diesel Mechanics can gain certifications and experience to advance to higher-level positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Diesel Mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Diesel Mechanic, you need a basic understanding of diesel engines, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or technical certification in diesel technology. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, hand and power tools, and shop management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate repairs, maintaining safety standards, and supporting efficient shop operations.

Is it easy to get a job as a diesel mechanic?

Entry-level diesel mechanic positions are generally accessible to those with technical training or certification, and demand for diesel technicians remains steady due to ongoing need for vehicle maintenance and repair. Having skills in diagnosing engine issues, using diagnostic tools, and obtaining relevant certifications can improve job prospects, but competition varies by location and industry conditions.

How to get started in diesel mechanic?

To start as a diesel mechanic, obtain a high school diploma or equivalent, then complete a technical training program or apprenticeship focused on diesel engines and repair techniques. Gaining hands-on experience through entry-level positions or internships and earning certifications such as the ASE Diesel Equipment Certification can improve job prospects.

Job description

We are seeking an entry-to-mid level Diesel Mechanic to join our team. In this role, you will work alongside our senior mechanics to inspect, maintain, and repair our trucks, trailers, and shop equipment. If you have basic mechanical experience, your own starter tools, and a strong work ethic, we will provide the hands-on training you need to build a high-paying, lifelong career in heavy equipment maintenance.

Key Responsibilities (We Will Train You on These!)

  • Preventative Maintenance (PM): Perform routine oil changes, fluid flushes, filter replacements, and grease jobs on Class 8 heavy trucks and specialized trailers.
  • Inspections: Learn to conduct systematic safety inspections, checking for worn parts, air leaks, and brake wear to keep our fleet fully DOT-compliant.
  • Brake & Suspension Repairs: Assist with repairing and replacing air brakes, wheel seals, leaf springs, and air bags.
  • Electrical & Hydraulics: Learn to troubleshoot basic 12V electrical systems (lights, wiring) and hydraulic lines on specialized trailers and forklifts.
  • Shop Support: Help keep the shop clean, organized, and safe. Assist senior mechanics with moving parts, setting up equipment, and managing shop inventory.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: Basic mechanical experience is required. This can include 1–2 years in an automotive/diesel shop, a graduate of a diesel tech trade school program, or equivalent hands-on experience (like working on farm equipment or military vehicles).
  • Tools: Must possess a basic set of personal hand tools (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers). The company provides specialized shop tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Mindset: A strong desire to learn, a positive attitude, and a focus on safety. You must be dependable and show up ready to work.
  • Licensing: A valid driver’s license is required. Having or being willing to obtain a Class A CDL down the road is a huge plus (we can help you learn to drive the trucks around the yard).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, bend, crawl, climb, and stand for extended periods in a heavy shop environment.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly pay based on your current skill level.
  • On-the-Job Training: Direct, hands-on mentorship from veteran heavy-haul mechanics.
  • Consistent, year-round day shift work (Monday through Friday schedule—no weekend rotations).
  • A stable, family-oriented work culture where you aren't just a number.
  • Paid holidays and comprehensive vacation time package.

Company Description

Since 1962, Olinger Heavy Hauling has been Kansas City’s premier choice for machinery moving, industrial rigging, and specialized heavy hauling. We pride ourselves on a "GET IT DONE" family culture that delivers turn-key solutions for oversized, heavy, and complex industrial projects.
Our fleet is unique—we operate heavy-duty semi-tractors, a wide variety of specialized trailers (ranging up to massive 13-axle setups), forklifts, and rigging cranes. Because our equipment is so specialized, we don’t expect you to know everything on day one. We are looking for someone with solid basic mechanical skills who is eager to learn from the best in the business.
