What is an entry developer?

Entry developers, sometimes called junior developers, are professionals who are at the beginning of their software development careers. They typically have basic programming skills and work under the guidance of more experienced developers to build, test, and maintain software applications. Entry developers often focus on learning new technologies, writing simple code, fixing bugs, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as they gain experience. Their role is essential for gaining practical knowledge and growing into more advanced development positions.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry developer typically expect to work on in their first year?

As an Entry Developer, you’ll often start by handling smaller, well-defined tasks such as fixing bugs, writing unit tests, or implementing simple features under the guidance of more experienced developers. You’ll likely participate in code reviews, attend daily stand-up meetings, and collaborate closely with team members to learn best practices and company coding standards. Over time, as you gain confidence and show proficiency, you may be given more complex assignments and opportunities to contribute to larger projects, setting a strong foundation for career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Developer, you need foundational programming skills, understanding of software development principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as version control systems like Git, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new technologies set successful candidates apart. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable code, collaborating effectively with teams, and adapting to evolving project requirements.

Through its robust suite of tools, Realtor.com® not only makes a significant impact on the real estate industry at large, but for consumers, navigating the biggest purchase they will make in their life, by providing a user experience that is easy to use, easy to understand, and most of all, easy to make decisions.
Join us on our mission to empower more people to find their way home by breaking barriers to entry, making the right connections, and building confidence through expert guidance.
At Realtor, our technology team participates in the research and development of scalable applications, identifying new technologies and trends to enhance our products and business. We build innovative solutions to help customers in their buying, renting, and selling journeys by connecting them with real estate agents and partners. We provide real estate agents and teams with best-in-class tools to manage their listings and grow their businesses. Join us to push the boundaries of what's possible and learn from world-class talent that promotes a culture of experimentation and learning.
We believe in leveraging the best tools to solve problems faster. You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs proficiently to accelerate development velocity, generate boilerplate, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. Beyond simple usage, this role requires critical judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security, performance, and accuracy. You should be comfortable integrating AI tooling into your daily workflow to eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on high-impact architectural and strategic engineering challenges.
We are hiring Staff Backend Software Engineers to join our team.
Three reasons to apply:
  • Impact: Your code submissions and approach to work are exemplary. You provide system-wide view and design guidance to the squad members and also influence the design decisions made by other teams.
  • Leadership: You help guide the team in making the right trade-offs between short-term requirements and the long-term business/operational success of the squad. You also mentor by actively participating in the code review process, design discussions, and team planning.
  • Collaboration: You work on project ideas with Product Management and engage with customers, stakeholders, and peers.

Potential Teams you will get to work on:
  • Seller Services - Build the core systems that help real estate agents do their daily work. You'll contribute to agent dashboards, lead delivery, and tools that help agents manage listings, clients, and grow their business - all with support from experienced engineers.
  • Branding & Promotions - Help build products that allow agents to promote their listings and reach more sellers. You'll work on customer-facing features, backend services, and experiments around pricing and packaging that directly support revenue and customer success.
  • Lead Services creates technology that helps people connect with real estate professionals as they search for a home. As a junior engineer, you'll work on features that improve how customers are matched with the right partners, helping drive business goals while learning and growing your technical skills.
  • Agent Branding - Build systems to help agents differentiate themselves from the crowd. You'll contribute to portals that allow our clients to configure their brand, report on their branding performance, and provide insights on how to improve their branding presence. Additionally, you will contribute to the systems that expose our clients' brand across realtor.com.
  • The Online Store - Digital storefront designed to provide customers with a seamless, high-performance shopping experience. This platform will enable agents and brokers to self-serve by reviewing product offerings and making purchases to promote their brands and listings. You will lead the development of this experience, architecting a scalable platform built to sustain rapid platform growth.
  • Performance and Insights - Build visual dashboards that expose performance metrics to our clients, helping them understand how their agents and products are performing. Use data science and analytics to provide insights to agents about how to optimize their leads and improve their market performance. Create conversational agents that help brokers understand how to take action on the data they see.
  • RMN Team - Help build a next-generation platform designed to transform how real estate professionals and home buyers collaborate. You'll contribute to net-new product capabilities, intelligent workflow tools, and scalable backend services that empower agents to operate more efficiently. It's a high-impact initiative where you'll work alongside senior technical talent to architect modern, cloud-native systems for strategic growth.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead the design and delivery for the ambiguous/complex problem space in the squad.
  • Provide guidance to team/s on system architecture and design.
  • Develop solutions that are of high quality, scalable, and reliable
  • Work collaboratively in squads composed of Product Managers, Designers, Analysts, and Engineers.
  • Mentor and develop a team of engineers
  • Investigate and prototype technologies that can be leveraged to introduce new innovations
  • Be self-directed, take initiative and drive towards solutions with little guidance

What You'll Bring:
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of experience contributing to system architecture and design
  • Experience in software development and a strong willingness to learn our technology stack, including: Python (FastAPI, Pydantic, NumPy, Pandas), React, Node.js, and GraphQL
  • Experience with cloud systems (AWS preferred)
  • Knowledge with data platforms and pipelines (snowflake & airflow preferred)
  • Experience working with relational or non-relational databases.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Interest in AI and ML, with a willingness to learn and apply emerging technologies
  • Experience delivering high value to customers quickly and frequently, with regular feedback and support
  • Experience evaluating trade-offs between design approaches
  • Software engineering best practices (e.g., testing, code reviews, documentation).
  • Experience in developing scalable systems
